Pragmatics and prosody in production and comprehension of scopally ambiguous sentences
In this paper, we analyze scopally ambiguous Russian sentences containing sentential negation and NPs with the quantifier ‘all’ following the verb. While prosody has been shown to disambiguate scope in artificial examples lacking pragmatic cues, we aimed to examine its role in real usage, including production and comprehension of natural sentences. For production, we collected examples from the Multimedia Russian Corpus and analyzed their interpr…
Metaphor in the Mental Lexicon
This study investigates the mental representation and processing of the two types of metaphorical senses in Russian polysemous verbs and adjectives using eye-tracking, sensicality judgment, and semantic clustering tasks. The metaphorical senses under study differ in their semantic proximity to the literal sense, with “proximal” metaphors (e.g. “raise prices”) retaining more semantic components, and “distal” metaphors being semantically bleached (…
Errors in foreign language acquisition as a multifaceted phenomenon
We study factors influencing aspectual errors in written texts of advanced learners of Russian with dominant English. Our study is based on the data from the Russian Learner Corpus, as well as a mini-corpus collected from a group of advanced Russian learners who are native speakers of English. Our findings suggest that the incidence, direction, and type of aspectual errors depend on the level of language mastery. On lower levels, there are more p…
Russian interrogative pronouns as a lexicographic type
Our study tackles Russian interrogative-relative pronouns ( wh -words) as a lexicographic type which requires a unified treatment. Our objective is to give a systematic description and explanation of the numerous collocational and constructional properties of the Russian wh -words using lexicographic and corpus methods. The dataset and statistics were extracted from the Russian National Corpus, at least 100 examples for each of the pronouns were …
Prices are rising, wages are falling
Syntactic properties of verbs in their metaphorical meanings are often explained as inherited from direct meanings. Using Russian verbs denoting increase and decrease (grow, fall, lower, etc.) as an example, we demonstrate that cognitive factors also influence syntactic properties of metaphorical meanings. The study is based on the data from the Russian National Corpus and RuSkell. We use collocation analysis to compare the semantic and syntactic…
Autonomous bi-pronominal distributive constructions in Russian
The paper is devoted to one type of Russian distributive constructions with two interrogative pronouns, such as kto kuda lit. “who where”, kto o čëm lit. “who about what”, kogda kak lit. “when how”, which bear the meaning ‘diff erent Xs are characterized by diff erent Ys’. We discovered that the constructions without a predicate in the right context form a special type, which diff ers both from indirect distributive questions and quasi-relatives …
Pragmatic mechanisms of manipulation in Russian online media
Pragmatics in the interpretation of scope ambiguities
This paper presents a corpus study of pragmatic factors involved in interpreting potentially ambiguous sentences with negation and universal quantifiers, as demonstrated by the Russian sentence Oni ne uspejut vsjo eto sdelat’ ‘They won’t have time to do all this.’ Ambiguity in such sentences results from potential differences in scope assignment. If negation scopes over the quantifier, we get the interpretation of partial negation: ‘They will man…
Double semantic roles in direct and metaphorical meanings of polysemous verbs
Syntactic idioms across languages
Corpus methods in pragmatics
The present paper is a comparative corpus study of the verbal expression of emotional etiquette in American English and Russian. The study is conducted against the backdrop of certain assumptions regarding the cross-cultural centrality and marginality of emotions as formulated in the current research on cross-cultural pragmatics. The paper employs corpus-based methods to test the frequencies of the linguistic expression of different types of emot…
The Myth of the “Russian Soul” Through the Mirror of Language
This paper aims at a linguistic description and evaluation of the myth of the Russian soul. This myth is a prominent cultural stereotype centered on mental, emotional, and spiritual concepts. The specific goal of this paper is to project the linguistic “image” of the Russian soul, which consists mainly of emotions, onto the corresponding cultural myth which exists in Russian literature and philosophy, as well as in Russian folk belief. Such a sup…
