Frances Flanagan. Remembering the Irish Revolution: Dissent, Culture, and Nationalism in the Irish Free State
Can the population of any island be more divided than that of pre–World War I Ireland? There were nationalist separatists and Ulster unionists, of course, but even separatists can be split into constitutionalists, revolutionaries, Gaelic revivalists, Anglo-Irish literary nationalists, socialists, and feminists, for example. Even the revolutionaries, members of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), were torn between thos…

The treaty of Waitangi in New Zealand law and politics

Lloyd George and the 1918 Irish Conscription Crisis
David Lloyd George was a great war-time prime minister. There seems to be little doubt about this, but his was leadership has been so extolled by his supporters that adverse criticism sometimes smacks of heresy. Nevertheless criticism is warranted which, whilst not attacking the man, will qualify the myth. What follows is a critical examiniation of Lloyd George and his Irish policy in 1918

Early infantile autism: Diagnosis, etiology, and treatment
Ireland and Anglo-American Relations 1899–1921
The years from the Boer War to the establishment of the Irish Free State were crucial not only for political developments in Ireland itself but also for the effect these had in Britain and America. A comprehensive picture is given in this book of the part Ireland played in the conduct of Anglo-American relations.
America and the Irish problem, 1899–1921
The United States census of 1910 revealed that there were four and a half million people in the United States who had beenborn in Ireland, or who had at least one Irish-born parent. The figures did not reveal that many other Americans identified themselves with Ireland, the country of their grandparents, or even of their great-grandparents, and it was not unusual for Irish-American leaders at that time to claim the support of fifteen or twenty mi…
Frewen’s Anglo-American campaign for federalism, 1910–21
In the literature of the Irish independence movement the question of a federal settlement involving the United Kingdom, and possibly the whole empire, in a grand scheme of ‘devolution’ has received relatively little attention. However, the papers of Moreton Frewen (1853–1924), now lodged in the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., should add a great deal to any assessment of this aspect of the Irish Problem. Frewen was a member of the Anglo-Iri…
