Global and local orientation in organisational actorhood
In this study we employ the glocalisation perspective in institutional theory to investigate the simultaneous existence of similarity and variation across organisations in world society. By focusing on responsibilities that organisations display, we analyse both global and local orientations of large publicly listed corporations. We first investigate whether the adoption of globally diffusing formal templates (such as ISO 14001, the United Nation…
The Consequences of Globalization for Institutions and Organizations
New Themes in Institutional Analysis
Using annual reports of Austrian listed corporations between 1990 and 2005, we analyze how corporations theorize their social and societal responsibilities. We empirically illustrate that these organizations not only evoke several distinct domains of corporate responsibility, but also assign themselves and others specific positions in the social matrix of relevancy and power - which in turn gives rise to a distinct pattern on the field level. We …
Shadows of the Past
Following research on transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), and having been motivated by arguments pertaining to the business systems approach, the authors propose that the existence of a communist heritage decreases the likelihood that employees will be consulted during organizational change processes. Results based on 23,876 firms across 27 of the European Union (EU-27) countries support this proposition. Moreover, the likel…
Unpacking the glocalization of organization
Over the past two decades, the notion of ‘glocalization’ came to stand for more than what the term literally encompasses. Not only does it refer to the mutually constitutive character of the global and the local; rather, it spearheads the challenge to the numerous dichotomies that have dominated previous discussions of globalization, and points to the dualities of similarity and variation as well as universalism and particularism. In this short e…
Global Themes and Local Variations in Organization and Management
Institutions and Ideology
This volume contributes to the literature on the sociology of organizations and management, especially to sociological institutionalism, by attempting to fill an important gap in institutional research. Our starting point is the conviction that organizational institutionalims is the conceptual and empirical venue to study ideology, both in its symbolic and material dimension and this volume represents an effort to refocus and revitalize these iss…
Klugheit
Transnational institution building and the multinational corporation
Since the 1980s, the international business and management field has produced a large amount of analysis and research on the multinational corporation (MNC) as an organization. Particularly influential has been the work of Prahalad, Doz and Bartlett (see particularly Doz et al., 1981; Bartlett, 1986; Prahalad & Doz, 1987) who, drawing on contingency theory, developed the integration-responsiveness framework to depict the different environmental f…
