Stratonikeian Incerta. I.Stratonikeia 1504
An attempt is made here to reconstruct the text and to make sense of a tantalising small Hellenistic fragment from Stratonikeia in Karia (I. Stratonikeia 1504). It is argued that the fragment most probably belongs to a letter written by an agent of the Antigonid king Philip V to the league of the Chrysaoreis and that it was inscribed in the sanctuary of Chrysaorian Zeus
Networks of Rhodians in Karia
This chapter highlights the strikingly undynamic, almost atrophied, picture that emerges from the epigraphical evidence, which is unusually monochrome: a picture of endless funerary or honorific commemorations for Rhodians. According to a now traditional designation introduced by Peter Fraser and George Bean in The Rhodian Peraea and Islands, Rhodian territorial possessions on the mainland fell into two parts: the &s;incorporated&s; and the &s;su…

La communauté de Panamara entre Rhodes et Stratonicée de Carie
The date and context of the Kymaian decrees for Archippe (SEG 33, 1035 - 1041)
A case is made here for dating the euergetic activities of the Kymaian benefactress Archippè to the 160s or 150s BC rather than to the period after the war against Aristonikos, and for seeing her as closely affiliated with the type of benefactor-philos represented by e.g. Pamphilos of Adramyttion, Asklepides of Pergamon or Herakleides, Timokrates and Eirenias of Miletos (as well as the young Moschion of Priene). It is proposed that the bouleuteri…
Networks of Rhodians in Karia
The extent and chronology of Rhodian domination in south-western Karia are becoming better understood as more inscriptions come to light. Much of it pre-dates Rome's granting of territories south of the Maeander to the island state in 188 BCE. An inscription from as far north as Hyllarima shows Rhodian presence there already in the 190s BCE. Rhodian interests were probably behind a major third-century sympoliteia in this region, that of inland Pi…
