  • Re-Imagining Catholic Ethics

    Open Access•Elise Mccarthy•ARTICLE•Religions•2024•References: 12

This paper will focus on one way of re-imagining Catholic ethics through the praxis of accompaniment, especially in situations that lend themselves to moral dilemmas and potential justifications of significant harm. The growing integration and shared discourse of scholars from the global south with those from the global north has given rise to deeper ethical insight about the praxis of accompaniment. In turn, I analyze some predominant ways of wr…

  • Just Peace Framework

Elise Mccarthy, Eli S McCarthy•ARTICLE•The journal of social encounters•2023

This short primer will describe the basic components of a just peace framework. Then I will describe the recent trajectory of Catholic and Christian discourse on just peace, as well as engage a related discourse at the United Nations on sustaining peace

  • Praxis of Accompaniment

Elise Mccarthy, Eli McCarthy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Catholic Social Thought•2023

In this essay, the author describes the trajectory toward a just peace framework in contemporary Catholic social teaching, as well as similar trends in the broader Christian community. He articulates a refined just peace framework or process that has arisen from and within a pastoral approach that listens to the experiences and voices of people in conflict situations across various cultural spaces. He then turns to the recent and challenging case…

  • The Virtue Ethic Difference in the Just War Discourse of James Turner Johnson and Catholic Social Teaching

    Elise Mccarthy, Eli McCarthy•ARTICLE•Political Theology•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 2

In this article, I investigate how incorporating virtue ethics into the process of interpreting and responding to conflict re-shapes the understanding and application of just war theory. More specifically, I analyze James Turner Johnson's idea of just war and the implications of Thomistic virtue ethics. My argument in this article is that Johnson's rule-based idea of just war theory lacks the more integrated virtue ethic, which we find in Thomas …

  • Responsibility and nanotechnology

    Open Access•Elise Mccarthy, C M Kelty et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2010•Cited by: 11•References: 14

In this paper we argue that the concept and practice of responsibility is being transformed within science and engineering. It tells the story of attempts by nanotechnologists to make responsibility ‘do-able’ and calculable in a setting where the established language and tools of risk and risk analysis are seen as inadequate. The research is based on ethnographic participant-observation at the National Science Foundation-funded Center for Biologi…
