Reflection AI: Feeding the machine - the hidden labour behind AI tools and ethical implications for higher education
As university instructors integrate AI tools, such as large language models (LLMs) into their pedagogy, they must grapple with the ethical and practical implications ofthese technologies. This reflection examines the overlooked labour of Cloudworkers and data workers whose contributions make AI systems functional. Drawing on insights obtained from Fairwork’s Cloudwork and AI research, it argues for the adoption of the Fairwork scoring system, as …
Fairness in the Work Behind the Ai Industry: How Action-Research Approaches Can Build Better Labour Conditions
The paper presents findings about the labor conditions on the work behind AI development, with two main goals. First, the aim is to investigate the current labor conditions in the AI industry and point out the lack of quality of outsourced jobs offered by digital labor platforms and Business Process Outsourcing companies, calling attention to the challenges faced by workers and the human costs of AI systems development. Building labour power in the platform economy: A comparative analysis of worker struggles in German and Norwegian food and grocery delivery
This study undertakes a comparative analysis of delivery workers’ struggles in Norway and Germany. Through the theoretical lens of the power resources approach, we analyse how delivery workers in Berlin and Oslo combine associational, structural, institutional, coalitional and discursive power resources, responding to different institutionalised frameworks of industrial relations. We make three contributions to debates on worker agency and resist…
Pressure and praise as an action research methodology: The case of Fairwork
In platform-mediated sectors such as ride-hailing, delivery, care work and cloudwork, gig workers often lack essential employment protections such as minimum wage and social security. Misclassification of workers, opaque algorithms, exploitation of legal loopholes and lobbying by platforms against protective legislation further exacerbates inequalities and discrimination. The Fairwork project at the University of Oxford and WZB Berlin, in collabo…

Blaming Kehl: Muslim Turkish Men and their Moral Journey in the Franco-German Borderland
Geographical space is more than a Cartesian plane where actors move across coordinates. It has a moral weight that renders each move subject to moral discourse. Yet, rarely does this premise prevent people from exploring spaces that are associated with anything wrong or bad. In fact, we continue to find people in places where they should not be, and doing things that are not just communally shunned but also personally acknowledged to be wrong or …

When Women Demand Prayer Space
On March 12, 2018, four women gathered in Istanbul’s iconic Fatih Mosque. Known today as members of the “Women in Mosques” (Kadınlar Camilerde) campaign, these women, many of them young and university educated, have been gathering in various mosques in Istanbul since October 2017 to address concerns pertaining to women’s use of prayer spaces in Turkey. Some of these concerns include lack of ablution rooms for women and their maintenance; lack of …
