  • Cartesian Trinitarian Persons

    Open Access•Joshua R Farris, Andrew Hollingsworth•ARTICLE•Religions•2024•References: 13

This paper explores the nature of Cartesian persons in relation to contemporary Social Trinitarian doctrines. We critically engage with three prominent models of the Social Trinity-those of William Lane Craig, Keith Yandell, and William Hasker-and examine how each defines the concept of personhood. Our analysis identifies the presence of a Cartesian notion of personhood (broadly defined) across all three models, though we argue that each presents…

    Open Access•Joshua R Farris•ARTICLE•Eidos A Journal for Philosophy of…•2023•Cited by: 1

“De-Conditioning and Images of the Mind” explores the categories of Stephen Priest as developed in his article, “The Unconditioned Soul.” Through an analysis of historical and contemporary examples of the “conditioned” mode in recent philosophical and scientific discussions of the mind, the article articulates limitations of the proposed methods and advances examples of “de-conditioning” the mind that point in the direction of what Priest calls t…

  • The Unsuitability of “Unsubstitutability” in Theological Anthropology

    Open Access•Joshua R Farris•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2020

When we wait for a significant other, it is not as if we are waiting for someone who looks like her, talks like her, or even walks like her. Instead, what we want is her. And, the same goes for the afterlife: if there is an afterlife, we long to see our loved ones. Not those who look like our loved ones, who sound like them, or even smell like them, but we actually want them. In the study of human nature, this is, arguably, one of the modern insi…

  • Emergent creationism

    Open Access•Joshua R Farris•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•2014

In the debate over the theology of the soul's origin, there have traditionally been three broad views on origins. These include creationism, traducianism, and Origen's pre-existence view. In the recent philosophy of religion and mind literature, William Hasker posits an alternative view of origins called emergent substance dualism. As a contribution to this discussion, I put forward one novel option as a via media between simple creationism and H…
