  • The impact of post-traumatic stress on quality of life and fatigue in women with Gulf War Illness

Open Access•Nandan Shastry, Esha Sultana et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2022

Our current findings support the understanding that comorbid symptoms of GWI and PTSD subsequently result in poorer quality of life and fatigue, along with establishing the possibility of varying clinical presentations

  • Post-traumatic stress impact on health outcomes in Gulf War Illness

Open Access•Mary Jeffrey, Fanny Collado et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2021

Therefore, this research supports the idea that comorbid GWI and PTSD symptoms lead to worse health outcomes, while demonstrating how GWI and PTSD symptoms may uniquely contribute to clinical presentation

  • Cultural Assets and Substance Use Among Hispanic Adolescents

    Open Access•Mindy Ma, Lydia R Malcolm et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Research on cultural factors and substance use among Hispanic adolescents has focused primarily on acculturation, while specific core Hispanic values and attributes have received minimal attention. The objective of the current study was to examine the relationship between traditional Hispanic cultural assets and substance use among adolescents. A purposive sample of 225 Hispanic adolescents (47% male) aged 13 to 16 years were recruited from commu…

  • Correlates of willingness to participate in microbicide research among African Americans

    Open Access•Mindy Ma, J Luther Kibler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2013•References: 23

The objective of the present article is to identify predictors of willingness to participate (WTP) in microbicide trials among African Americans. A total of 595 participants completed a survey on WTP in microbicide trials and predictors of WTP. Significant associations were observed for relationships of greater WTP with female gender, greater HIV risk, lower mistrust of research, and knowing someone with HIV/AIDS. An interaction revealed HIV risk…

  • Psychometric properties of the Posttraumatic Stress Checklist among young African-American men and women

J Luther Kibler, Mindy Ma et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2011

Research has demonstrated the validity and reliability of the Posttraumatic Stress Checklist (PCL) in predominantly Caucasian samples. However, there has not been a study that examined the psychometric properties of the PCL specifically for African Americans. The present paper is an examination of the factor structure, internal stability, reliability, and predictive validity of the PCL among a sample of young African American men and women. Confi…

  • The relationship between posttraumatic stress symptoms and sexual risk

Charnette D Munroe, J Luther Kibler et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2010

Little is known about behavioral and psychological mechanisms that may explain relationships between posttraumatic stress and sexual risks. As rates of HIV infection among African American women remain significantly higher than for other female subgroups, research on sexual risk among African American women is needed. The present study examines the relationships of posttraumatic stress symptoms as measured by the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Che…

  • Hypertension in Relation to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Depression in the US National Comorbidity Survey

J Luther Kibler, Kavita Joshi et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2008

The clinical literature increasingly indicates that cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are more common among individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Depression also poses a risk for CVD and is often comorbid with PTSD. Research to date has not established whether PTSD is associated with additional CVD risk beyond the risks associated with comorbid depression. The authors examined relationships of lifetime …

  • Psychometric Evaluation of a Coping Strategies Inventory Short-Form (CSI-SF) in the Jackson Heart Study Cohort

    Open Access•Clifton Addison, Brenda W Campbell‐Jenkins et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007

This study sought to establish the psychometric properties of a Coping Strategies Inventory Short Form (CSISF) by examining coping skills in the Jackson Heart Study cohort. We used exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson's correlation, and Cronbach Alpha to examine reliability and validity in the CSI-SF that solicited responses from 5302 African American men and women between the ages of 35 and 84. One item was dropped from the 16-i…

  • Sympathoimmune Anomalies Underlying the Response to Stressful Challenge in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Spectrum Disease

    Barry E Hurwitz, Kimberly A Brownley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2005

Objective: This study examined immune, endocrine, and cardiovascular reactivity during stressful behavioral challenge in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositive (HIV+) and seronegative (HIV−) men and women and assessed whether immunocellular reactivity was differentially associated with concomitant alterations in sympathetic response. Methods: The 133 HIV+ [84 asymptomatic, 49 symptomatic] and 92 HIV− subjects completed a speech stress re…

  • Cognitive and physiological antecedents of threat and challenge appraisal

Joe Tomaka, Jim Blascovich et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997•Cited by: 35•References: 6

Cognitive appraisal theories of stress and emotion propose that cognitive appraisals precede physiological responses, whereas peripheralist theories propose that physiological arousal precedes cognitive processes. Three studies examined this issue regarding threat and challenge responses to potential stress. Study 1 supported cognitive appraisal theory by demonstrating that threat and challenge cognitive appraisals and physiological responses cou…

  • Racism and racial categorization

Jim Blascovich, Natalie A Wyer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997•Cited by: 35•References: 5

Social identity theory predicts that perceivers strongly identified with an in-group will maximize the distinction and maintain a clear boundary between their own and other groups by categorizing others' membership accurately. Two experiments tested the prediction that racially prejudiced individuals, who presumably identify highly with their racial in-group, are more motivated to make accurate racial categorizations than nonprejudiced individuals…
