  • Research Note: New Perspectives on Kongo in Revolutionary Haiti

    Open Access•James A Sweet, James Sweet•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 17

On February 26, 1794, Louis Narcisse Baudry des Lozières arrived at the port of Norfolk, Virginia, from Le Havre on the coast of France. His journey had not been an easy one. Shortly after leaving France, the ship carrying Baudry, his wife, their 13-year-old daughter, and a Norman servant girl was caught in a terrible storm. The family endured a harrowing four-month Atlantic crossing, but they had experienced far worse. Just two years earlier, Ba…

    Open Access•James A Sweet, James Sweet•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•2015•References: 1

The following pages present an important scholarly exchange on a central sociocultural issue in Latin American history. First, we present J. Lorand Matory's review of Luis Nicolau Parés's 2013 book The Formation of Candomblé: Vodun History and Ritual in Brazil . Second, we present Parés's response to the review

  • Closing Thoughts

    Open Access•James A Sweet, James Sweet•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•2015•References: 1

As someone who assigns both Matory and Parés in my graduate courses, I find myself asking what is at stake in this debate. If we take Matory at face value, Parés is an unreformed “Herskovitsian” who searches for linear connections between vodun religion in West Africa and the Jeje Candomblé in Bahia. According to Matory, Parés's emphasis on primordial Africa is based on a quest “to avenge the honor of the Jeje nation.” But avenge it from what? Ag…

  • Changing Patterns of Remarriage

Larry Bumpa, Larry L Bumpass et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1990•Cited by: 66

After briefly reviewing recent trends in US remarriage rates this paper focuses on the variation in these rates as measured in the 1980 and 1985 June Current Population Surveys. For data quality reasons it focuses on rates observed in the 5 years before each of the surveys. It begins by discussing the demographic composition of separation cohorts as a factor affecting remarriage rates and ultimately the structure of remarriages. It next examines …

  • National Survey of Families and Households: (386712004-001)

James A Sweet, James Sweet et al.•DATASET•PsycEXTRA Dataset•1988

This collection provides data on the family experience in the United States. At a time when the range of family structures is becoming more and more diverse, this study permits a close examination of the resulting family compositions and household operations. One adult, the primary respondent, was chosen from each of 13,017 households in the study. In addition to the main interview conducted with the primary respondent, a shorter, self-administer…

David S Goldstein, Raymond Dlonne et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1982

We studied the circulatory, psychological, plasma catecholamine, cortisol, and lipid responses to a real-life stress--third molar extractions--in 21 patients and the effects of sedation with intravenous diazepam and of inclusion of epinephrine with the local anesthetic. Across all patients, the surgery was associated with significantly increased heart rate (25%), systolic blood pressure (13%) and cardiac output--as indicated using impedance cardi…
