  • Climate Change, Vulnerability, and Responsibility

    Open Access•Chris J Cuomo•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2011•Cited by: 29•References: 6

In this essay I present an overview of the problem of climate change, with attention to issues of interest to feminists, such as the differential responsibilities of nations and the disproportionate “vulnerabilities” of females, people of color, and the economically disadvantaged in relation to climate change. I agree with others that justice requires governments, corporations, and individuals to take full responsibility for histories of pollutio…

  • Advancing Landscape Change Research through the Incorporation of Iñupiaq Knowledge

    Open Access•Wendy R Eisner, Chris J Cuomo et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2009

Indigenous knowledge is a valuable but under-used source of information relevant to landscape change research. We interviewed Iñupiat elders, hunters, and other knowledge-holders in the villages of Barrow and Atqasuk on the western Arctic Coastal Plain of northern Alaska to gain further insight into the processes governing the ubiquitous lakes and the dynamics of landscape change in this region of continuous permafrost. The interviews provided a …

    Chris J Cuomo, Chris Cuomo•ARTICLE•Ethics & the Environment•2003

  • On Ecofeminist Philosophy

    Chris J Cuomo, Chris Cuomo•ARTICLE•Ethics & the Environment•2002

In the heat of a historical moment when the interwoven nature of imperialism, ecological degradation, exploitation of workers, racism, and women's oppression is painfully obvious to many, ecofeminism appears to be gaining in popularity. As Karen Warren's book Ecofeminist Philosophy (2000) illustrates, a key insight of ecological feminism is captured by the phrase "it's all connected." In more precise terms, ecofeminism stresses the depth to which…

    Chris J Cuomo•ARTICLE•Environmental Ethics•1999

  • Feminist Ethics and Connection Amidst Evil

    Chris J Cuomo•ARTICLE•Social Theory and Practice•1998

The particularities of The Unnatural Lottery: Character and Moral Luck and Maternal Ethics and Other Slave Moralities, and the differences between them, illustrate much about what the projects of feminist ethics are currently taken to be, and where those projects might lead us next. In different ways, with very different goals in mind, both Claudia Card and Cynthia Willett investigate the potential for ethics in the context of oppression. And for…

  • Thoughts on Lesbian Differences

    Open Access•Chris J Cuomo•ARTICLE•Hypatia•1998•Cited by: 1

Cheshire Calhoun argues chat thinking of lesbians as a subcategory of women provides an insufficient basis for considering key differences between lesbians and straight women, and that these politically significant differences are therefore erased by theories and politics that take the subject of feminism to be women. Here 1 look closely and critically at CaJhoun's own account of lesbian differences, and argue that sexual desire, while complicate…

  • War Is Not Just an Event: Reflections on the Significance of Everyday Violence

    Open Access•Chris J Cuomo•ARTICLE•Hypatia•1996•Cited by: 20•References: 3

Although my position is in basic agreement with the notion that war and militarism are feminist issues, I argue that approaches to the ethics of war and peace which do not consider “peacetime” military violence are inadequate for feminist and environmentalist concerns. Because much of the military violence done to women and ecosystems happens outside the boundaries of declared wars, feminist and environmental philosophers ought to emphasize the s…
