Ways of improving access to mental health support among East Asian American dementia caregivers
The findings underscore the collaborative role of both community and individual efforts in improving access to mental health support for East Asian American caregivers, highlighting the need for targeted, culturally responsive approaches to better address their unique needs
Innovative Exercise for Nursing PhD Students
BACKGROUND: Nursing PhD students face the difficulty of conducting integrative literature reviews that may lead to bias and lack of rigor particularly in the literature search, data evaluation, and data analysis stages. This article describes the development and use of an arts-based learning exercise to identify potential biases and improve on the critical and writing skills of students during the integrative literature review process. METHOD: Th…
Sexual and Gender Minority Differences in Likelihood of Being a Caregiver and Levels of Caregiver Strain in a Sample of Older Adults
Over the next two decades, the number of caregivers is expected to climb dramatically alongside a rise in older adults, particularly sexual and gender minority (SGM) older adults, yet little research has assessed differences between SGM and non-SGM care partners. Data for these analyses come from the Columbus Healthy Aging Project (N = 79). This study was designed to assess several domains of health among adults aged ≥50 years in Columbus, Ohio, …
Characteristics of Sexual and Gender Minority Caregivers of People With Dementia
Objectives: Given what little is known about the experiences of sexual and gender minority (SGM) caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), the aim of the current study was to describe psychosocial measures among these caregivers. Methods: We used an online survey and social media recruitment strategies. Results: Of 286 caregivers, the majority were gay men. Most respondents were white, with a third identifying as…
“It’s just part of life”
The purpose of this study was to gain a greater understanding of the experiences of African American daughters caring for parents with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia (ADRD). In this secondary analysis of a subset (N = 12) of the sample from a previous study, daughters averaged 54 years of age and were caring for parents with moderate to severe ADRD. Results revealed two main categories: Caregiver Concerns and Caregiver Coping. Subcateg…
A theory-informed, process-oriented Resident Scholarship Program
Based on our experience, and in line with the SDT, supporting residents' autonomy, competence, and relatedness through a process-oriented scholarship program may foster the curiosity, inquisitiveness, and internal motivation to learn that drives scholarly activity and ultimately the production of scholarly products
Quality of Life in Rural and Urban Adults 65 Years and Older
Purpose: The proportion of people over 65 years of age is higher in rural areas than in urban areas, and their numbers are expected to increase in the next decade. This study used Andersen's behavioral model to examine quality of life (QOL) in a nationally representative sample of community‐dwelling adults 65 years and older according to geographic location. Specifically, associations between 3 dimensions of QOL (health‐related QOL [HQOL], social…
Factors associated with quality of life in older adults in the United States
Analyzing Data
Establishing the rigor of their method is essential for all qualitative researchers. Taking a reflexive approach, this article considers the process of data analysis adopted by a nurse researcher conducting a study into the experiences of informal careers of terminally ill cancer patients. The personal and historical antecedents that led the researcher to use a particular data analysis strategy, drawing on previous academic experience in anthropo…
The Twelve-Hour Shift in the Petroleum and Chemical Industries
Reports the results of a 1977 field survey of plant managers in the United States that instituted 12-hour shifts in the petroleum and chemical industries. Description of a common eight-hour shift; Requirements met by plant managers in adopting 12-hour shifts; Schedules followed by plant managers in adopting a 12-hour shift. (Abstract copyright EBSCO.)
