  • Interpretation of anaphoric pronouns across bilingual populations

    Open Access•Elisa De Cristofaro•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2026

This study investigates anaphora resolution in bilingualism by comparing two profiles of bilinguals: adult second language speakers (L2ers) of Italian (L1: Dutch) and heritage speakers (HLers) of Italian with Dutch as the dominant language. Previous research has extensively shown that L2ers of null-subject languages tend to refer overt pronouns to topical antecedents more often than monolinguals. Studies focussing on HLers are comparatively limit…

  • The production of subject anaphoric devices

Elisa De Cristofaro, Koen Plevoets•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•References: 61

This study investigates the production of Italian subject anaphoric devices by monolinguals (L1s), second language speakers (L2s), and heritage language speakers (HLs) with Belgian Dutch as their first or dominant language. Extensive research has shown that bilinguals tend to overuse explicit anaphoric devices compared to monolinguals. While this pattern has been documented across various bilingual profiles, studies directly comparing L2s and HLs…

  • Discourse markers in L1 and L2 Italian

Open Access•Elisa De Cristofaro, Linda Badan et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2023•References: 4

This article compares the use of discourse markers (DMs) in Italian as a second language (L2) produced by Belgian-Dutch learners, with the DMs produced by Italian native (L1) speakers. The quantitative analysis of the data shows that L1 speakers produce more DMs than L2 speakers, whereas the comparison between the levels of proficiency in L2 reveals an effect of the type of task on the frequency of DMs. From the qualitative analysis, interesting …
