  • Geological, paleoenvironmental, and depositional dynamics at the Middle Pleistocene Palaeoloxodon antiquus-bearing site of Campo della Spina, Central Italy

    Open Access•Paul P A Mazza, Fabrizio Marra et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2024

The paleontological site of “Campo della Spina”, in central Italy, offers valuable insights into Middle Pleistocene paleoenvironments. Excavations revealed well-preserved skeletal remains of an adult Palaeoloxodon antiquus , embedded in a sedimentary lens displaying alternating lacustrine and volcanoclastic flow characteristics. The well-preserved state of the remains suggests the elephant died at the site where it was found and was subsequent bu…

  • Taphonomic analysis of the MIS 4–3 (Late Pleistocene) faunal assemblage of Biśnik Cave, Southern Poland: Signs of a human-generated depot of naturally shed cervid antlers

  • Gonfienti (Prato, Tuscany, Central Italy), a zooarchaeological snapshot on daily sixth-century Etruscan household life

    Open Access•Chiara Capalbo, G Peri et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•References: 19

While Etruscan sites have received considerable attention over the years, scholarly focus has rarely been directed on the faunal remains from the various celebrated archaeological localities. The present is a zooarchaeological analysis of archaeofaunal material from Gonfienti, a renowned Etruscan locality near Prato, in north-central Tuscany. The vast, complex archaeological site includes a large building, called Edifice 1, that was constructed s…

  • Poggetti Vecchi (Tuscany, Italy): A late Middle Pleistocene case of human-elephant interaction

  • Paleoenvironmental context of the early Neanderthals of Poggetti Vecchi for the late middle Pleistocene of Central Italy

    Open Access•Marco Benvenuti, Jean-Jacques Bahain et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

Work on thermal pools at Poggetti Vecchi in Grosseto, Italy, exposed an up to 3-meter-thick succession of seven sedimentary units. Unit 2 in the lower portion of the succession contained vertebrate bones, mostly of the straight-tusked elephant, Palaeoloxodon antiquus , commingled with stone, bone, and wooden tools. Thermal carbonates overlying Unit 2 are radiometrically dated to the latter part of the middle Pleistocene. This time span indicates …

  • Preliminary data from Valle Giumentina Pleistocene site (Abruzzo, Central Italy): A new approach to a Clactonian and Acheulian sequence

    Open Access•Elisa Nicoud, Daniele Aureli et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 5

  • The latest Ursus spelaeus in Italy, a new contribution to the extinction chronology of the cave bear

Open Access•Ivan Martini, Mauro Coltorti et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

The skeleton of a young prime adult cave bear, Ursus spelaeus , was found in Chiostraccio Cave (Siena, Tuscany, central Italy), only slightly buried under rock falls. The specimen was dated yielding a conventional age of 24,030 ± 100 14 C yr BP (29,200–28,550 cal yr BP), which makes it the latest known representative of the species in Italy. The skeleton was accompanied by the remains of wolf ( Canis lupus ), wild boar ( Sus scrofa ), aurochs ( B…
