  • The shared genetic architecture and evolution of human language and musical rhythm

Open Access•Gökberk Alagöz, Else Eising et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2024•References: 101

This study aimed to test theoretical predictions over biological underpinnings of previously documented phenotypic correlations between human language-related and musical rhythm traits. Here, after identifying significant genetic correlations between rhythm, dyslexia and various language-related traits, we adapted multivariate methods to capture genetic signals common to genome-wide association studies of rhythm (N = 606,825) and dyslexia (N = 1,…

  • Polygenic prediction of educational attainment within and between families from genome-wide association analyses in 3 million individuals

Open Access•Aysu Okbay, Yeda Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Genetics•2022

We conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment (EA) in a sample of ~3 million individuals and identify 3,952 approximately uncorrelated genome-wide-significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A genome-wide polygenic predictor, or polygenic index (PGI), explains 12–16% of EA variance and contributes to risk prediction for ten diseases. Direct effects (i.e., controlling for parental PGIs) explain roughly half th…

  • Age and size at maturity in women

    Open Access•Matthew H Mcintyre, Pamela M Kacerosky•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2011

Objectives: We present the first review and meta‐analysis of the association between adult stature and age at menarche over a broad range of human societies. We then outline possible biological explanations for observed empirical associations. Methods: We analyzed the association between adult stature and age at menarche in 141 samples from published reports, including 35 samples for which the within‐sample association was also reported. Results:…

  • Adult stature, body proportions and age at menarche in the United States National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) III

  • The Early Development of Gender Differences

    Matthew H Mcintyre, Carolyn Pope Edwards•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2009•Cited by: 13•References: 132

This article reviews findings from anthropology, psychology, and other disciplines about the role of biological factors in the development of sex differences in human behavior, including biological theories, the developmental course of sex differences, and the interaction of biological and cultural gendering processes at different ages. Current evidence suggests that major biological influences on individual differences in human gender, to the ex…

  • Index‐to‐ring finger length ratio (2D

Open Access•Matthew H Mcintyre, Judith Flynn Chapman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2007

We tested the association between the index‐to‐ring finger length ratio (2D:4D) and ovarian steroid hormone concentrations measured over the course of a menstrual cycle in the saliva of 38 young women. Estradiol levels were positively associated with right‐hand, but not left‐hand, 2D:4D, and also with the difference between right‐ and left‐hand 2D:4D. None of these measures predicted progesterone level.Am. J. Hum. Biol. 19:434–436, 2007. © 2007 W…

  • Sex dimorphism in digital formulae of children

    Open Access•Matthew H Mcintyre, Barbara A Cohn et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2006•Cited by: 23•References: 43

This paper presents results of a study designed to: 1) test for a sex difference in the relative lengths of the finger bones, including the second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D:4D), using left-hand radiographs taken in young children, 2) test whether sex differences can be explained by sex differences in fetal growth, and 3) test the serial stability of sex differences in relative digit lengths, including 2D:4D. Results are presented from 1,060 subje…

  • Romantic involvement often reduces men's testosterone levels--but not always

Matthew H Mcintyre, Matthew Mcintyre et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2006•Cited by: 19

Testosterone (T) appears to facilitate what biologists refer to as mating effort--the investment of time and energy into same-sex competition and mate-seeking behavior. Multiple studies show that men who are romantically involved (i.e., are paired) have lower T than single men, which may be due to a facultative adjustment by men of T levels in response to lower demands for mating effort. The authors proceeded on the basis of the idea that men who…

  • Effects of developmental and adult androgens on male abdominal adiposity

Open Access•Matthew H Mcintyre, Susan F Lipson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2003

We present results from 42 gay men who completed a survey including self‐measurement of waist circumference, height, and weight, in addition to providing saliva samples for the assay of testosterone, and a photocopy of the right hand for the measure of second‐to‐fourth digit length ratio (2D:4D), proposed as a means of approximating androgenic effects during development. The analyses were conducted as a test of the recent hypothesis, proposed by …
