Open Access•María Elvira Mocholí Martínez, Ángel Enrique Salvo-Tierra•ARTICLE•Millars Espai i Història•2024

Because of the transgression of the first woman Eve, all medieval women bore the punishment, including the biological consequences related to pregnancy and birth. This affected the entire female gender, according to Judeo-Christian tradition. Although Mary was able to avoid some biological consequences, this was not the case with breastfeeding. This work aims to study sacred images-and especially those of the Nursing Mary-from an interdisciplinar…

  • Humility

Open Access•María Elvira Mocholí Martínez, Manuel Moreno Castaneda et al.•ARTICLE•Religions•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This paper considers Marian iconography in which the Virgin is depicted sitting on the ground, known as the Virgin of Humility. The creation of this Marian type coincides with Saint Thomas's systematization of the virtues, which resulted in a decline in the importance of the virtue of Humility. The combination of both cultural traditions has led to a correspondence between the virtue of Humility and the images of the Virgin of Humility. The genes…

  • 'In altum mittis radices humilitatis'.

Certain Marian iconographic subjects have proved to be especially propitious to the representations of the Virgin in relation with some natural elements. The Mother of God is, often, in direct contact with the land in numerous images of the Virgin of Humility and in a garden, surrounded with flowers, in the Virgin of the Rose Garden; whereas, after her Assumption, lilies and roses bloom in the empty sepulcher. In all these cases, as we can figure…
