Getting Undergraduates Ready for China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Through an Overseas Experiential Learning Project
In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (…

Kampung Air
This paper presents the results of a baseline study of settlements built on water ( kampung air ) along the coast and rivers of Borneo. Using remote sensing data we measured the extent of water villages and estimated their number of households and inhabitants. We estimate that water villages cover an area of approximately 25 sq. km, housing 215,000 inhabitants. Though water villages are closely routed in Malay customs and traditions, it appears t…
Knowledge Cluster Formation as a Science Policy in Malaysia
Regional science policy aims to create productive knowledge clusters, which are central places within an epistemic landscape of knowledge production and dissemination. These so-called K-clusters are said to have the organisational capability to drive innovations and create new industries. Many governments have used cluster formation as one of their development strategies. This paper looks at Malaysia's path towards a knowledge-based economy and o…

Beyond the Knowledge Trap
Based on the success of the World Scientific publication “Governing and Managing Knowledge” edited by Thomas Menkhoff, Hans-Dieter Evers and Chay Yue Wah in 2005, this unique volume presents 16 new theoretical-practical papers on the strategic aspects of developing knowledge-based economies with case studies from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Uzbekistan. A key question which the book seeks to answ…
The Maritime Potential of Asean Economies
Countries may utilize a long coastline in relation to their landmass as a resource to develop their maritime economy. This paper argues that ASEAN countries differ in utilizing their maritime potential. As a basis for further comparative studies the Center for Policy Research and International Studies (CenPRIS) in Penang developed a set of indicators to measure the maritime potential of nations, the state of their maritime industries, and the deg…

Knowledge in development
Knowledge has become a decisive and competitive resource for local and global development, especially since the paradigm "knowledge for development" was initiated and promoted by the World Bank in 1998-1999. Through the use of novel management structures and technologically supported social networks, development organisations and development experts are central actors in producing and steering global knowledge. In the various regions of the world…
Globalizing Local Knowledge
Globalizing Local Knowledge
New knowledge is produced at great speed and fed into a global epistemic machinery of data banks, publications, and think tanks. In reverse, global knowledge is absorbed and used locally. Locally produced knowledge is on the increase as society moves towards a knowledge society. Social science research adds to knowledge of societies. If it is locally produced, it can be interpreted as reflexive modernization in so far as it provides paradigms for…

Malaysian Knowledge Society and the Global Knowledge Gap
Knowledge has been widely recognised as the most important factor of production in a "new economy". The production, dissemination and utilisation of knowledge are therefore essential for development. Some countries, Malaysia among others, have embarked on an ambitious plan to use knowledge as a base for economic development, by-passing earlier stages of industrialisation. Some commentators have, in contrast, asserted "that it is doubtful that the…
Transition towards a Knowledge Society
Malaysia and Indonesia see themselves as being on the way of developing into knowledge societies. Indonesia's political leadership only vaguely circumscribes the characteristics of this new stage of development. Malaysia's political elite has, however, developed a vision when and how to reach the stage of a fully developed industrialised nation with a knowledge-based economy. This paper outlines the basic features of a knowledge society and analy…

Loosely Structured Social Systems
The Formation of a Social Class Structure
Urbanization and bureaucratization are usually connected with a high rate of social mobility in western industrialized societies. In Thailand, however, mobility has declined between at least certain strata of Thai society following the consolidation of a bureaucratic elite in the expanding urban centre of Bangkok. The growing size, the monopolization of certain status symbols, the development of a distinct subculture, and the concentration of eco…
The Moral Economy of Trade
Trade and State Formation
Though local and international trade is a main point on the agenda of any government and though economists build elaborate models around trade statistics, the social consequences of trade have hardly ever been explored in full by social scientists. This is particularly the case in Thailand where only a few studies of limited scope exist on traders, businessmen and markets. There is a reason for this lack of attention to trade. The series of post-…

Monographs and Theoretical Studies in Sociology and Anthropology in Honour of Nels Anderson was published between 1972 and 1989. Nels Anderson was a pioneer in the study of the homeless. In the early 1920s Anderson combined his own experience "on the bummery," with his keen sociological insight to give voice to a largely ignored underclass. He remains an extraordinary and underrated figure in the history of American sociology. On Hobos and Homele…
"Monastic Landlordism" in Ceylon
Studies on social and political change tend to emphasize factors promoting change rather than factors maintaining or reenforcing an existing or a "traditional" social and political system. Among the topics studied from this point of view in Ceylon are the "disintegrating village" (Sarkar and Tambiah 1957), the caste system, a "system in transition" (Ryan 1953), the impact of population growth and colonial legislation on "land tenure in Village Ce…
Kinship and Property Rights in a Buddhist Monastery in Central Ceylon1
Celibate Theravada Buddhist monks at Malwatte Vihare in Kandy, Ceylon, form ordination lineages through a continuous succession of monk-teachers and their pupils. A statistical analysis shows a strong tendency for lineage heads to ordain relatives as pupils if they have temple property to transmit. The field data do not bear out claims of monks that the relationship is normally matrilateral. It is pointed out that informants translate expected be…

Trade as Off-Farm Employment in Central Java
During the past two decades off-farm and other non-agricultural employment has increased rapidly in rural Java mainly due to an increase infernale employment in petty trade. After a discussion of various definitions and hypotheses on the growth of off-farm employment and trade it is concluded that the growth in petty trade is not a sign of economic stagnation or agricultural involution but rather a crucial step in the transformation of Javanese p…

The Bureaucratization of Southeast Asia
Spectacular events tend to capture our attention-the war in Cambodia, oil exploration and production on Malaysia's coast, the assassination of Benigno Aquino and internal strife in the Philippines, the election of two solitary opposition candidates to Singapore's parliament, the rejuvenation of Indonesia's military command structure, coup rumours in Thailand: an endless string of more or less spectacular or even decisive happenings that find them…

Buddha and the Seven Gods
Theravāda Buddhism has during the past century been an annoyance to scholars who tried to find a general and crossculturally valid definition of religion. Durkheim refuted Frazer's minimal definition of religion being "the belief in Spiritual Beings" solely on the grounds of the notable exception of Theravāda Buddhism. He based his argument that "the idea of gods is absent, or at least, ... plays only a secondary and minor role" mainly on the now…

Global Market Cultures and the Construction of Modernity in Southeast Asia
Belief in the benevolence of free markets has become a fundamental credo of professional experts, economists, business people and politicians. We regard this discourse as part of a new culture of markets, which has also taken root in Southeast Asia. Expanding markets and using high-tech devices of communication are interpreted as cultural systems that are used in the construction of modernity. An `unbridled romanticism of productivity' (Baudrilla…

Urban Development and Landownership in Butterworth, Malaysia
Butterworth in the state of Penang is becoming an important urban centre in Peninsular Malaysia. The rapid industrialization taking place within and just outside the city limits, the opening of its military airport to civilian traffic, and the extension of its harbour facilities for ocean-going vessels have all served to encourage further urban development. The considerably increased frequency of the car ferry service to Penang island (since 1975…
