Starting the School Year on the Right Foot: Effects of a Summer Learning Program Targeting Vulnerable Students in Italy
We conduct a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the impact of a summer learning program for vulnerable students across nine cities in Italy ( N = 1,038). The program included educational workshops in small groups (88 hours) and personalized tutoring (12 hours). Results indicate positive effects of the program on Italian skills and, albeit weaker, on mathematics. The positive results were most pronounced among primary school students and amon…
Preparing assessment literate teachers: A cross-national trend analysis
Preparing teachers for assessment (i.e., assessment literacy) represents a contested issue, both at the educational policy and practice levels. Entering this debate, we explored patterns of initial teacher education (ITE), continuous professional development (CPD), assessment practices, and teachers’ learning needs in the assessment domain. Using data from the IEA-PIRLS teacher questionnaire (2011–2021) and the OECD-TALIS (2008–2018), a cross-nat…
Experimental Research in Education: An Appraisal of the Italian Experience
This work provides an assessment of the Italian experimental literature in the field of education. We review 25 RCTs completed between 2009 and 2020, analysing their alignment to the CONSORT guidelines. Our findings show that the scientific reporting is on average of good quality; however, there are areas where a significant improvement is needed. We suggest viable solutions, aimed at improving the robustness of experimental research in sociology…
Formal instruction vs informal exposure. What matters more for teenagers’ acquisition of English as a second language
This paper provides a comparative analysis of the drivers of English Language Competence (ELC) in a representative sample of European adolescents. School factors – such as English instruction time and English onset – are found to play an important role, especially in countries whose official languages are more distant from English. However, schools do not fully compensate for disparities in ELC. Gender, parental education and parental socioeconom…
Increasing College Going by Incentivizing Savings: Evidence from a Randomized Controlled Trial in Italy
We estimate the impact of a matched savings account program on high school students’ college enrollment and persistence through a randomized controlled trial carried out in Italy. The tested program (Percorsi) provided low‐income high school students with a 4:1 match rate for savings dedicated to higher education expenditures and required that they attended financial education classes. The program increased rates of enrollment and persistence in …
The Palgrave Handbook of Race and Ethnic Inequalities in Education
This authoritative, state-of-the-art reference work builds on its first edition to provide a cutting-edge systematic review of the relationship between race/ethnicity and educational inequality, studying 25 different national contexts drawn from every inhabited continent on earth.
The impact of citizenship on intermarriage: Quasi-experimental evidence from two European Union Eastern enlargements
According to assimilation theory, the more immigrants are integrated within host countries the more likely they are to intermarry. However, status exchange theory argues instead that when integration is low, immigrants may use intermarriage as a means of i
Do Mixed Unions Foster Integration? The Educational Outcomes of Mixed-Parentage Children in Italy
Investigating the link between migration and civicness in Italy. Which individual and school factors matter
This paper investigates the link between migration and civicness using data on cognitive skills and civic competences collected from a sample of 2747 eighth-graders in Italy. Contrary to the abundant evidence of migrant/native gaps in educational and occupational attainments in the country, this study finds no migrant-specific gap on civicness development. Children of immigrants achieve lower levels of civic knowledge than natives, but difference…
An Empirical Study of Status Exchange through Migrant/Native Marriages in Italy
The growth of migrant/native marriages documented in many developed countries is often regarded as an indicator of immigrants’ assimilation into host societies. We argue that a close examination of assortative mating patterns in migrant/native marriages is critical for a proper assessment of the link between immigrants’ assimilation and intermarriage. Specifically, we test the relevance of the status exchange hypothesis to accounting for mixed ma…
The academic achievements of immigrant youths in new destination countries: Evidence from southern Europe
This article examines academic achievements of immigrant youths in four new immigration countries: Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The analysis based on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) of 2009 and 2012 reveals large educational achievement gaps between immigrant children and natives in all four south European countries. The achievement gaps shrink substantially after accounting for differences in family backgrounds. T…
Do they progress or do they lag behind? Educational attainment of immigrants’ children in Italy: The role played by generational status, country of origin and social class
Educational Achievement Gaps between Immigrant and Native Students in Two "New" Immigration Countries: Italy and Spain in Comparison
The authors use 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) data to determine how immigrant children in Italy and Spain compare with native students in reading and mathematics skills. Drawing on the vast empirical literature in countries with traditionally high rates of immigration, the authors test the extent to which the most well-established patterns and hypotheses of immigrant/native educational achievement gaps also apply to t…
