  • Cooperation between schools and elite sports. How are schools affected from engaging in athletic talent development

Jens Christian Nielsen, Lotte Stausgaard Skrubbeltrang et al.•ARTICLE•International Studies in…•2020•Citada por: 2•Referências: 10

In this article, we show how collaboration between Danish municipal primary and lower secondary schools (folkeskoler) and elite sports clubs to establish SportsClasses enables schools to set parameters that align student-athletes’ attitudes and behavior towards school and academic performance. Using neo-institutional theory, we show how two separate institutional domains – education and sport – come to agree on common purposes and practices for a…

  • Reproduction and opportunity

Open Access•Lotte Stausgaard Skrubbeltrang, David Karen et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 38

In this article we analyze the patterns of retention in SportsClasses of promising young athletes in Denmark. Since 2005, SportsClasses have provided extra training for potential elite athletes in Grades 7-9 in designated Danish public schools. They were introduced after the Danish Ministry of Culture lowered the age of recruitment for athletes from 15 to 12 in response to increased competition in the world of elite sports. The SportsClasses atte…

  • The legitimacy of elite gatekeeping

    David Karen•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2017•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

Natasha Warikoo's study of how students at Harvard, Brown, and Oxford Universities view race and fairness highlights the vast differences between the U.S. and Britain with respect to perceptions of meritocracy by these winners in the competition for places in elite institutions. The strict enforcement of uniform standards for admission is seen as critical and legitimate at Oxford, whereas a more holistic approach in the U.S. - one that sees racia…

  • Early Factors Leading to College Graduation for Asians and Non-Asians in The United States

    Open Access•Thomas P Vartanian, David Karen et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2007•Citada por: 8•Referências: 26

This article explores factors that lead Asian Americans, both as a group and as subgroups, to obtain a college degree in comparison to members of other racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Using data from the 2000 wave of the National Education Longitudinal Study, we find that the effects of race on educational attainment virtually disappear once individual and family factors are controlled. However, there is significant heterogeneity in co…

  • No Child Left Behind? Sociology Ignored

    Open Access•David Karen•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•2005•Citada por: 3•Referências: 3

Too many American children are segregated into schools without standards, shuffled from grade-to-grade because of their age, regardless of their knowledge. This is discrimination, pure and simple-the soft bigotry of low expectations. And our nation should treat it like other forms of discrimination. We should end it. One size does not fit all when it comes to educating children, so local people should control local schools. Those who spend tax do…

  • Changes in Access to Higher Education in the United States

    David Karen•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•2002•Citada por: 67

This article explores the factors that determine how high school graduates become linked to colleges at particular levels of selectivity. First, it assesses various theories of change in educational attainment by comparing patterns of access to institutions of higher education of varying selectivity in the United States between 1980 and 1992. Second, with regard to how students and colleges of varying selectivity are matched, it replicates the wo…

  • Sport and Society

    Robert E Washington, David Karen•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•2001•Citada por: 53•Referências: 75

Despite its economic and cultural centrality, sport is a relatively neglected and undertheorized area of sociological research. In this review, we examine sports' articulation with stratification issues, especially race, class, and gender. In addition, we look at how the media and processes of globalization have affected sports. We suggest that sports and cultural sociologists need to attend more closely to how leisure products and practices are …

  • The Politics of Class, Race, and Gender

    David Karen•ARTICLE•American Journal of Education•1991•Citada por: 24

This article, synthesizing the available (published and unpublished) evi-dence, describes patterns of inclusion of African-Americans, women, and working-class youth into the system of higher education from 1960 to 1986. Focusing not only on whether access has increased, but on whether these subordinate groups have gained access to elite institutions, this article examines the three groups in and across two periods (1960-76; 1976-86) to highlight …

  • Toward a Political-Organizational Model of Gatekeeping

    David Karen•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•1990•Citada por: 24

This article develops a theory of gatekeeping in the context of a case study of admission to an elite college-Harvard College. By focusing on the political and organizational context within which gatekeeping takes place, it shows how meritocratic and class-based factors each play roles in the decision-making process. The article demonstrates how attention to the organization and its field yields critical information about the microprocesses that …
