  • A Scoping Review of Acculturation Challenges of Immigrants From the Former Soviet Union in the United States From a Life Course Perspective

Open Access•Saltanat Childre, Nibedita Shrestha et al.•ARTICLE•Families in Society The Journal…•2026

The United States is home to over a million former Soviet Union (FSU) immigrants, yet literature on their familial dynamics and mental health and well-being is scarce. Following Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, this scoping review synthesizes literature since 1990 about FSU immigrants’ acculturation and well-being across 10 databases. The scoping review included 39 studies. The selected articles revealed three themes: (a) maintaining cultural and…

This study explores the adaptations of recent immigrants from Central Asia (CA) to the United States. Using qualitative grounded theory analysis of narratives from 42 immigrants, gathered through semi-structured interviews and focus groups, acculturation, life course development, resilience, and intersectionality frameworks were applied to the analysis. Participants included 21 women and 21 men aged 22 to 45. Three major themes emerged. The first…

  • Against the World

Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•ARTICLE•The Polish Review•2025

On the eve of World War I, the Hungarian feminist Rosika Schwimmer triumphantly hosted an international congress of women's suffrage activists in Budapest. A decade later, Schwimmer was a stateless refugee without a passport. Her fate was emblematic of the way the world changed after 1914. Prewar enthusiasm for the free movement of goods, ideas, and people around the world shriveled. Across Europe and the United States, support for internationali…

When Czechoslovakia’s communist government came to power after World War II, its leaders embarked on a project to create a completely new society. In State and Society in Communist Czechoslovakia, Roman Krakovský examines their attempt to revolutionize the world around them. The book focuses on how communism transformed everyday life, particularly the ways the communist state tried to create new structures of time and space. Within this broad top…

Judith Szapor’s book Hungarian Women’s Activism in the Wake of the First World War: From Rights to Revanche is the first to examine the politicization of Hungarian women during this tumultuous period. • Young Mothers’ and Fathers’ Perceptions of Relationship Violence

    Open Access•Judith W Herrman, Lori‐Ann Palen et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2018•References: 7

Teens and young adults who are pregnant or parenting are important targets for efforts to prevent intimate partner violence (IPV). To intervene appropriately and effectively, we need to fully understand the unique issues and contexts for IPV in this population. This focus group study examined young parents' ( N = 28) perceptions of their relationships, stressors and sources of conflict, forms of IPV, and help-seeking behaviors. We examined data u…

  • Telling Lies, Making Truth

Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•BOOK•Curtain of lies•2017

This chapter analyzes the political function of show trials in Eastern Europe. It argues that while show trials told lies, their primary purpose was to reveal new truths about the Cold War world to their East European audiences. Show trials described a world where the peace-loving socialist East was continually menaced by the imperialist West, which sent spies and saboteurs to wreck its economic development and plotted to destroy it in a nuclear …

  • The Fight for Peace

Mark Feinberg, Melissa Feinberg•BOOK•Curtain of lies•2017

This chapter examines the Communist-led peace movement and analyzes its propaganda. Like show trials, the peace movement spread a similar set of messages around the Soviet bloc and throughout the world. Unlike the show trials, peace discourse was primarily concerned with revealing the truth of the warmongering West. For example, peace activists detailed American war crimes in Korea and exposed American racist policies at home. Within Eastern Euro…

This article examines the coverage by Radio Free Europe (RFE) of the show trial of Rudolf Slánský in 1952 and contrasts this coverage with documents on the response to the trial within Czechoslovakia. RFE aggressively portrayed the trial as a pack of lies and condemned its anti-Semitism as not authentically Czechoslovak. The response within Czechoslovakia was more much nuanced. Open Access•Richard Spoth, Max Guyll et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2011•Cited by: 9•References: 22

There is a knowledge gap concerning how well community-based teams fare in implementing evidence-based interventions (EBIs) over many years, a gap that is important to fill because sustained high quality EBI implementation is essential to public health impact. The current study addresses this gap by evaluating data from PROSPER, a community-university intervention partnership model, in the context of a randomized-control trial of 28 communities. …

Their declaration marked the beginning of a new era in the Czech lands, one in which Czechs, as the majority nation, hoped to redefine the terms of political discourse.
