  • Military Sexual Assault and Moral Injury

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Gabelmann, Michelle L Kelley et al.•ARTICLE•Identity•2026

In the present study, we examined whether identity coherence and identity confusion moderate the association between military sexual assault and self-directed and betrayal-based moral injury among service members. Participants were 242 U.S. military members (159 males; Mage = 33.2 years, SD = 8.6) who had experienced one or more deployments. Multivariate multiple regression models tested identity coherence and identity confusion as statistical mo…

  • Binegativity, Childhood Maltreatment, Impulsivity, and Risky Behaviors Among Heavy Drinking Bisexual Women

Michelle A Stage, Amanda Sherman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Bisexuality•2025•References: 11

Bisexual women report more alcohol use and sexual risk-taking than lesbian or heterosexual women. Few studies have examined the underlying mechanisms associating stress sources (binegativity, childhood trauma) with drinking and sexual risk-taking behaviors among bisexual women. Impulsivity may be one such mechanism. This study tested if impulsivity served as a mechanism between childhood trauma, binegativity, alcohol use, and sexual risk-taking. …

  • Sleep disturbances and psychological well-being among military medical doctors of the Swiss Armed Forces

Open Access•Dena Sadeghi Bahmani, Dena Sadeghi-Bahmani et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background Compared to civilians and non-medical personnel, military medical doctors are at increased risk for sleep disturbances and impaired psychological well-being. Despite their responsibility and workload, no research has examined sleep disturbances and psychological well-being among the medical doctors (MDs) of the Swiss Armed Forces (SAF). Thus, the aims of the proposed study are (1) to conduct a cross-sectional study (labeled ‘Survey-Stu…

  • Subtypes of Alcohol Expectancies Are Differentially Associated With Alcohol Use for Bisexual and Heterosexual Women

    Amy L Stamates, Christina T Schulz et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2024

Background: Bisexual women, compared to heterosexual women, report greater amounts of alcohol use and heavy drinking. Alcohol expectancies (i.e., beliefs about alcohol outcomes) are a strong predictor of alcohol use, but few studies have examined the importance of alcohol expectancies in relation to alcohol use among bisexual women specifically or in comparison to heterosexual women. Objectives: The current study examined 262 heterosexual and 225…

  • Normative Perceptions of Sexual Behavior and Alcohol Use among Bisexual Women

    Sabrina M Todaro, Christina T Schulz et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2024

Background: As compared to heterosexual and lesbian women, bisexual women report higher rates of alcohol, other substance use, and risky sexual behavior, and they experience more negative outcomes from these behaviors. Descriptive norms (i.e., perceptions of others’ behavior) are an important predictor of risky behaviors, but scant research has examined whether bisexual women’s perceptions of other bisexual women’s alcohol use and sexual behavior…

  • A Review of Empirical Treatments Focused on Mind-Body and Spiritually Grounded Complementary Practices for Moral Injury among Veterans

Michelle L Kelley, Megan Strowger et al.•ARTICLE•Counseling and Values•2024

Investigators have called for mind-body practices and spiritual and religious approaches for the treatment of moral injury in veterans. Programs and interventions that use mindfulness, meditation, spirituality, prayer, and other techniques span different academic disciplines and can be difficult for investigators and clinicians to identify but are important for those who work with veterans with moral injury. This paper reports a review of a syste…

  • An Examination of Protective Factors for Bisexual Stigma and Alcohol Use among Heavy Drinking Young Bisexual Women

    M Rothstein, Christina T Schulz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Bisexuality•2024•References: 19

Bisexual women are an at-risk population for hazardous drinking. One factor contributing to their risk is binegativity (discrimination from heterosexual and lesbian/gay communities). Research has found a positive association between binegativity and alcohol use, but few studies have explored protective factors (bisexual identity affirmation, connectedness to bisexual community) that may buffer this relationship. Consequently, we examined the impa…

Rachel L Davies, Sean Cox et al.•ARTICLE•Identity•2023

We examined whether higher levels of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and gender were associated with three dimensions of identity (i.e., commitment, in-depth exploration, and reconsideration) and meaning in life (i.e., meaning in life and search for meaning) among recent-era veterans. Participants were 174 post-9/11 veterans (55.8% men; mean age = 36.4 years; SD = 10.1 years) who had experienced one or more deployments. After contro…

  • Remote exposure to traumatic events and PTSD symptoms among U.S. Air Force intelligence personnel

Michelle L Kelley, Adrian J Bravo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

Findings emphasize the importance of moral injury in understanding PTSD symptoms in ISR personnel. Specifically, because MIEs and PTSD are possible in remote combat agents, prevention and intervention efforts for ISR actors should directly target this special population with recognition that (a) remote combat exposure can be traumatic and (b) perceived violations of moral beliefs or values may be central to any posttraumatic psychopathology. (Psy…

  • Own soul's warning

Michelle L Kelley, John W Chae et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2021

Our findings suggest that the presence of meaning in life may serve as a protective factor for veterans experiencing moral injury (particularly self-directed moral injury) that is associated with suicidal ideation. It is possible that guiding veterans with moral injury symptoms to develop more meaning or purpose in their lives may reduce suicidal ideation. • Killing during combat and negative mental health and substance use outcomes among recent-era veterans

Michelle L Kelley, Adrian J Bravo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2018

OBJECTIVE: Although killing in combat is associated with negative mental health outcomes and hazardous alcohol use, mechanisms that underlie this risk are not well understood. To our knowledge, this present brief report is the first to use mediation analysis to examine associations between killing in combat, distinct facets of rumination (problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts), and negat…

  • Bisexual women’s reports of descriptive drinking norms for heterosexual, bisexual, and lesbian women

    Open Access•Sarah J Ehlke, Amy L Stamates et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Sexual Orientation…•2018•References: 11

Bisexual women drink more than lesbian and heterosexual women. However, few studies have examined factors that influence drinking among bisexual women. Although descriptive drinking norms are strong predictors of drinking, little research has examined how drinking norms influence alcohol use for bisexual women. The present study examined bisexual women's reports of descriptive drinking norms for bisexual, lesbian, and heterosexual women, and asso…
