  • A Salvage Archaeological Excavation at the Sasanian Site of Gatwa-Sûr (Erbil Province, Kurdistan Region of Iraq); A Newly Discovered Early Christian Burial in the Mountains of Soran

Open Access•Francesc Xavier Garcia-Ramis, Alicia Gluitz et al.•ARTICLE•Iraq•2025

The excavation of the site of Gatwa-sûr in the Zagros region of the Kurdistan region of Iraq has provided valuable insights into Early Christian burial practices in Northern Iraq during the Sasanian period. The discovery of an earthenware coffin adorned with symbols that highlight the presence of Christian oriented groups in the region provides new data on burial customs under Sasanian rule. This archaeological evidence strengthens our knowledge …

  • Investigating the function of late-Neolithic ‘husking trays’ from Syrian Jazira through integrated use-alteration and phytolith analyses

  • Identifying biological affinities of Holocene northern Iberian populations through the inner structures of the upper first molars

    Open Access•Beatriz Gamarra, M Lozano et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 88

Neolithisation was a relatively fast process that affected both the interior and coastal zones of the Iberian Peninsula, but it was also a heterogeneous process that had diverse impacts on genomic and cultural diversity. In the Late Neolithic-Chalcolithic, a change in funerary practices, cultural material and trade networks occurred, and genomic heterogeneity decreased, suggesting human mobility and genetic admixture between different Iberian pop…

  • Ceramic-faience hybrids were used to recycle bronze in North-Western European Iron Age egg-shaped crucibles

    Open Access•D J Huisman, Anna Gómez-Bach et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 7

We investigated the characteristics of a group of 13 Middle Iron Age egg-shaped crucibles and crucible fragments from Tilburg (The Netherlands). We used a combination of optical and chemical analyses, including hand-held XRF, microCT scanning and 3-D printing polarizing light microscopy and SEM-EDX. The chemical analyses confirmed that the crucibles were used for copper alloy metallurgy. Impressions in the lids of the crucibles turned out to be i…

  • Between Tigris and Zagros

    Johnny Samuele Baldi, Anna Gómez-Bach•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2019

Mesopotamian Prehistory has been attracting increasing interest in recent decades. From the first traces of hominids to the caves frequented by the Neanderthals, from the Neolithisation to the emergence of the first proto-urban and urban experiences, the northern sector of the so-called “Cradle of civilisation” played a fundamental role in the evolutionary dynamics of Western Asia. The northern portion of the Mesopotamian alluvium is the only one…

    Johnny Samuele Baldi, Anna Gómez-Bach•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2019

    Johnny Samuele Baldi, Anna Gómez-Bach•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2019

  • Conclusion

    Johnny Samuele Baldi, Anna Gómez-Bach•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2019

Even before the publication of this special issue of Paléorient, the success of dedicating a thematic volume to the Prehistory of Iraqi Kurdistan was underscored by the number and quality of the articles received by the editorial committee. Indeed, since 2011, nearly all of the expeditions working in this region have increased their efforts in prehistoric research, or have at least developed research axes on periods from the Paleolithic to the be…
