  • The Ecology of Knowledge

    Shachar Freddy Kislev•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2024•References: 10

Why is art allied with philosophy? Why are artists expected to be familiar with critical discursive practices? This paper sketches a naturalistic framework for approaching this problem by conceptualizing knowledge as a complex adaptive system. The author argues against a static image of the disciplines, as implied by Biglan’s typology, and proposes an evolving understanding of disciplinary dynamics. Based on this framework, the author suggests th…

  • Hegel and Knowledge Organization, or Why the Dewey Decimal Classification Is Not Hegelian

    Shachar Freddy Kislev•ARTICLE•Information & Culture•2021

It has been argued that the Dewey Decimal Classification system—the DDC—is Hegelian, that the primary division of the system is based on Hegel’s philosophy. This article argues against this claim. It demonstrates that the underlying principle for the distribution of subjects in the DDC is not Hegelian and that the support for this idea was always weak. It also demonstrates that, as a classification principle, the supposed philosophy underlying th…

  • Six Hegelian Theses about Technology

Shachar Freddy Kislev•ARTICLE•Techné Research in Philosophy and…•2020

Hegel has long been considered a major thinker of progress. This paper extends Hegel’s philosophy of progress into an outline of a philosophy of technology. It does this not by directly reading the little Hegel wrote on the subject, but by introducing six central Hegelian ideas that bear on the technological thought. It argues that, for Hegel, (1) mankind is destined to change its destiny; (2) that true change involved qualitative change; (3) tha…

  • A Self-Forming Vessel

Shachar Freddy Kislev•ARTICLE•Journal of the British Society…•2020•References: 16

Highlighting the relations between De Anima II.5 and De Anima III.4, this paper argues that Aristotle held a surprisingly dynamic view of the intellect. According to this view, the intellect is in a constant development brought about by its own activity. This dynamic view distinguishes the intellect from both physical objects and from sense-perception. For Aristotle the intellect is a “nothing” that gradually becomes something by thinking. The pa…

  • On the word BUT and its function

    Shachar Freddy Kislev, F Kislev•ARTICLE•SubStance•2020

At what "resolution" does Hegel's dialectic operate?Does it dictate the transition between arguments in a chapter, or the transition between chapters in a book, or the transition between books in the system? This paper suggests that Hegel's method can be seen to work at the level of paragraph composition. It proposes that Hegel's use of a certain form of paragraph is consistent with his account of his method. This use reflects how Hegel conceptualiz…
