  • The counterargumentative connection in Italian

Nadal Sanchis Laura, Bello Viruega Iria•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2025

Counterargumentation marks the disruption of a causal chain by introducing an unexpected conclusion that cancels inferences drawn from a previous premise. The present study compares the processing costs produced by three minimal counterargumentative structures: a) counterargumentation marked by the Italian connective tuttavia (Eng. ‘however’); b) counterargumentation in utterances lacking a connective but containing the phoric element entrambi (E…

  • Counter‐Argumentation and the Rigidity of Procedural Meaning

Open Access•Nadal Sanchis Laura, Bello Viruega Iria•ARTICLE•Studia Linguistica•2025

The counter‐argumentative Italian connective tuttavia (Eng. “however”) marks the disruption of a causal chain by introducing an unexpected conclusion that cancels inferences drawn from a previous premise. Thus, under neutral conditions, tuttavia connects two argumentatively anti‐oriented members of discourse. Conversely, if those members hold a coordinated relationship, the premise would be argumentatively insufficient to allow a discursive relat…

  • The Spanish organizers por un lado, por otro lado and discursive overmarking

Open Access•Nadal Sanchis Laura, Bello Viruega Iria et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2025•References: 3

The Spanish correlative pair por un lado (Eng. ‘on the one hand’) and por otro lado (Eng. ‘on the other hand’) fulfill an informative structuring function: it presents two subcomments and organizes them under the same topic. Its procedural meaning does not provide a clear instruction on the argumentative orientation of the cohesive segments. Thus, they can be used both in argumentatively co-oriented and anti-oriented contexts, depending on the ar…

  • Gender Doublets as a Mark of Gender Inclusive Language

Open Access•Laura Nadal, Nadal Sanchis Laura et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Over the last decades, gender inclusive language has become a debated issue in which two opposing positions hardly reach a meeting point: those who believe that the masculine plural form for groups of people can be interpreted as neutral, unmarked and inclusive of both biological sexes compared to those who claim that the generic masculine is a sexist use of language, while the gender doublet forms (los políticos y políticas) are alternatives tha…

  • Insights from an empirical study on communicative functions and L1 use during conceptual mediation in L2 peer interaction

Nadal Sanchis Laura, Bello Viruega Iria•ARTICLE•IRAL - International Review of…•2024

Conceptual mediation is one of the competences described by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) during the acquisition of foreign languages. When practicing mediation, learners collaborate in the construction of knowledge to conduct activities that require higher-level cognitive skills, such as teamwork. This study analyzes the communicative functions and L1 use in peer interaction during a conceptual mediation activity in a group o…

  • Evaluating Person-Centred Integrated Care to People with Complex Chronic Conditions

Open Access•Miquel Àngel Mas, Ramón Miralles Basseda et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•References: 7

Early implementation of the ProPCC programme results in an increase in time spent at home (up to 3%) and significant reductions in emergency department attendance (-37.2%) and hospital stays (-38.3%). The increased use of primary care resources is compensated by the hospital resources savings, with a result in the average total cost of -46.3
