  • A Qualitative Investigation of Adherence Issues for Men Who Are HIV Positive

    Alex Westerfelt•ARTICLE•Social Work•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 1

People who are HIV-positive and people who have been diagnosed with AIDS have new hope in the form of antiretroviral medications. However, many social workers remain unaware of the rigors of this treatment regimen and the difficulties it presents. This article presents the results of a qualitative study of HIV-positive individuals who have struggled with the adherence issues endemic to antiretroviral treatment and seeks to give voice to their exp…

  • Homeless and Indigenous in Minneapolis

Alex Westerfelt, Michael Yellow Bird•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Behavior in the…•1999•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Indigenous peoples are overrepresented in the homeless population. This paper examines the extent to which homelessness and some of its possible antecedents and consequences differ for indigenous peoples and majority whites residing in the city of Minneapolis. We conclude that being homeless and indigenous in Minneapolis is a significantly different experience for this group than it is for majority whites. The cultural context of indigenous homel…

  • Drug use disorders and treatment contact among homeless adults in Alameda County, California

    M J ROBERTSON, Cheryl Zlotnick et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•Cited by: 23•References: 17

OBJECTIVES: This study estimates the extent and distribution of specific drug problems among homeless adults. METHODS: A countywide probability sample of 564 homeless adults received structured interviews that included a standardized assessment of substance use disorders. RESULTS: Two thirds of the sample (69.1%) had a lifetime history of a substance use disorder (including abuse of or dependence on alcohol [52.6%] or drugs [52.2%]); half had a c…

  • Exits from and Returns to Homelessness

    Irving Piliavin, Bradley R E Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1996•Cited by: 45•References: 1

This study explores transitions between homeless and domiciled states. It describes the timing of departures from and returns to homelessness, and it tests theoretical propositions linking individual attributes and experiences to these transitions. Four theoretical frameworks guide the analyses: institutional disaffiliation, human capital deficiencies, personal disabilities, and acculturation. The data come from a longitudinal study of homeless i…

  • Health Status and Health-Care Utilization among the Homeless

Irving Piliavin, Alex Westerfelt et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1994•Cited by: 4

Although previous studies have documented the relatively poor health of homeless people compared with other people, research on the predictors of health status and health-care utilization among the homeless has been quite limited. The study reported here departs from most earlier efforts in that it was based on a comparatively broad sample of homeless individuals and employed logistic regression techniques to identify attributes of the homeless t…

  • The Duration of Homeless Careers

Irving Piliavin, Michael R Sosin et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1993•Cited by: 44

In this article, we examine the duration of homeless careers. We build a model of career length based on four conceptual frameworks: institutional disaffiliation, psychological dysfunction, human capital deficit, and cultural identification. Using survey data from a sample of 331 individuals in Minneapolis, we estimate a structural equation model of homeless career onset and duration. We find that, conditioned on age, people who have less consist…
