The Dynamics of Monthly Increments in the First Postnatal Year
154 Punjabi infants (86 boys; 68 girls), born in Chandigarh between 1978 and 1981, have been measured every month during the first year of life for body weight, crown-heel length and head circumference. The statistics of the variable and their increments in terms of average increases dur ing the first and last halves of the year as well as over the whole year, and some of the correlations have been discussed
Emergence of deciduous teeth in Punjabi children, North India
Data on deciduous tooth emergence of 312 children aged 4 to 31 months of Punjabi parentage are presented. Probit analysis was used to derive the median age of tooth emergence. Female children are found to be advanced with respect to tooth emergence than their male counterparts. While comparing the present data with those from other populations it is found that, in general, the mean number of emerged teeth in Punjabi children is more at most ages,…
Estimation of calendar age from the emergence times of permanent teeth in Punjabi children in Chandigarh, India
Gingival emergence data for permanent teeth, obtained from an earlier cross-sectional study of 1137 Punjabi schoolchildren aged 6-14 years in Chandigarh, India, have been used to calculate the median age and the 10th-90th percentile range of age, for a given number of teeth present. From about 5 years (when the first tooth, on average, emerges) up to the time of emergence of second molars (around 14 years), the total number of permanent teeth eme…
Fetal growth from 12 to 26 weeks of gestation
175 freshly aborted fetuses (including three pairs of twins), 12-26 weeks postmenstrual age and products of induced expulsion from 172 Kashmiri women, were observed for 12 anthropometric measurements, namely, crown-heel length, crown-rump length, trunk height, head length, head circumference upper-arm length, fore-arm length, hand length, thigh length, leg length, foot length and weight. The general pattern of age changes in various body dimensio…
The Epidemiological Transition in Dental Occlusion in a North Indian Population
The mylohyoid bridge in four population samples from India, with observations on its suitability as a genetic marker
Four adult skeletal samples from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar in India have been studied for the incidence of mylohyoid bridge. The incidence, varying between 2.98% and 7.14%, has been compared with frequencies reported for other populations of the world. The range of variation for Indians, as a whole, falls within the lower levels of the spectrum of worldwide variation for this trait, ranging between 0.47% for French Eu…
Part 3
Occipital hair whorl as a racial criterion
Reports on the incidence of single clockwise occipital whorls as opposed to double and counterclockwise whorls reveal no consistent geographical pattern. Earlier workers arrived at different conclusions. While Bernstein ('25b) and Schwartzburg ('27) suggested a dominant inheritance of counter‐clockwise whorls, others like Winchester ('58) and Montagu ('63) believed the clockwise condition to be dominant. In the light of these and some other studi…
The ABO blood groups and ABH secretions in the Tibetans
ABO Blood groups and ABH secretion factors were investigated among 62 Tibetans at Rahla (Kulu), India. The frequencies of the alleles “P,” “q” and “r” have been found to be 0.166, 0.187 and 0.647 respectively, which are quite comparable to the results obtained by Prince Peter et al. ('61) and Buchi ('52). A high frequency of secretors is found among the Tibetans which favours Buchi's ('54) assumption that the true Mongoloids have a rather high se…
