  • Reading through Aurality 's Afterlives

Ana Maria Ochoa, Ana María Agudelo Ochoa•ARTICLE•American Music•2024

As I read through the articles in this symposium, I experienced Aurality anew, engaged with the invited authors and their work, and, in some cases, relived moments of my life as a teacher, as a scholar, or simply as a friend. This symposium is collectively constituted through analytically entangling the book in new theoretical and cross-cultural contexts, timely interventions on its theoretical presuppositions, anecdotes about classes or conversa…

Thomas Porcello, Louise Meintjes et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2010•Cited by: 51•References: 92

Although anthropological and critical social theory have a long interest in sensory experience, work on the senses has intensified within the past 20 years. Studies of in…

We trace its history as a response to the technological mediations and listening practices emergent in modernity and note its absence in the anthropological literature. We then trace the history of technology that ga…

  • García Márquez, macondismo, and the soundscapes of vallenato

Open Access•Ana Maria Ochoa, Ana María Agudelo Ochoa•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2005•Cited by: 2

This article is about the role of García Márquez and particularly macondismo as an ideology in establishing the canonic validity of vallenato as a folk genre from the Colombian Caribbean. García Marquez' chronicles of the early 1950s are seen as foundational texts on the aesthetics and value of vallenato; texts which influence subsequent writings on the topic. One of the main topics explored is how these texts acquire canonic validity through the…
