Preface to the special issue on Humans, Animals and Societies of Andean Civilization
This special report, arising from a collaboration of archaeology and anthropology, consists of the results of a research project aimed at elucidating the process of social complexification that took place during the early stage of the Andean civilization that established itself on the Pacific coast of South America.Archaeology that focused on the Andean civilization of South America was established as a field of study in the early 20th century.Th…
Prevalence of dental caries and antemortem tooth loss at Pacopampa in an initial stage of social stratification in Peru’s northern highlands
This study examined the occurrence of carious lesions and antemortem tooth loss (AMTL) in skeletal remains from Pacopampa, a Formative period site in Peru. We sought to identify variations in carious lesions and AMTL within and between groups to uncover insights into social stratification and subsistence. Targets were permanent teeth and alveoli from skeletal remains from the Pacopampa I (1200–700 BCE) and Pacopampa II (700–400 BCE) phases. In th…
Isotopic study of maize exploitation during the Formative Period at Pacopampa, Peru
Maize (Zea mays) was an important staple and ceremonial food in the pre-Columbian Andean world. Previous researchers have studied maize agriculture in early ancient Andean society by examining macro- and microbotanical remains. However, isotope analyses of human remains have shown that maize was not a primary food resource during the Formative Period (1800–1 cal BC). Although a few studies have suggested that maize was consumed in this period, we…
Ritual consumption and sacrifice of llama (Lama glama) at the Pacopampa site in the Northern Highlands, Peru
Domesticated camelids spread to Peru’s Northern Highlands by 500 BC. The complexity and development of the society that then developed in the region have been explained by social networks enabled by the use of the llama as a cargo animal. However, the actual use of domesticated camelids in the Formative Period remains unclear. This study analyzed camelid skeletal remains excavated from the Pacopampa site (1200–400 BC) to provide information on th…
Depressed skull fracture at Pacopampa in the Peru’s northern highlands in the Late Cajamarca Period
The Pacopampa site is one of the largest Formative Period sites in Peru’s northern highlands. In the 2013 field season, we uncovered human remains from the stairs between the second and third platforms and found a rare case of a depressed skull fracture on the cranial vault of a middle-aged male. This study aims to describe the fracture and explore chronological changes in violence in Peru’s northern highlands. The radiocarbon date of this male i…
Bioarchaeology of human skeletons from an elite tomb at Pacopampa in Peru’s northern highlands
The Pacopampa site is one of the largest Formative Period sites in Peru's northern highlands. This study describes newly excavated human remains from the site, compares them with previous findings, and provides bioarchaeological approaches to assess social stratification in Formative Period Andes, leading to an understanding of how social stratification emerged in the Andean civilization. The human remains studied were two individuals from an eli…
Human skeletal remains from the Pacopampa site in the northern highlands of Peru
The Pacopampa site, located in the northern highlands of Peru, is an archeological site belonging to the Formative Period (2500 BC–0 AD). The purposes of this study are to observe and describe the human skeletal remains from the Pacopampa site, to estimate the sex and age-at-death of each individual, and finally to diagnose morphological traits and skeletal disorders. The materials used here are 498 human skeleton parts. The sample comprises at l…
