Elamite and Dravidian: Further Evidence of Relationship [and Comments and Reply]
This paper presents the correspondences in verbal morphologies to support the existing lexical and other morphological evidence (reported elsewhere) that the Dravidian language family is closely cognate with Elamite. It uses primarily Achaemenid Elamite, for which the most detail is available, and in particular the description of the verb given by R. T. Hallock. A great deal of use is made of Dravidian Ver Morphology by P. S. Subrahmanyam. For on…

Judeo-Persian Deverbatives in -ŠN and -ŠT
The starting point of this presentation of data is the modern Persian deverbative nominal abstract in -éš. These are freely formed in Persian from the present stems of verbs. A trustworthy standard source on the origin of this suffix is P. Horn, “Neupersische Schriftsprache”, Grundriss der Iranischen Philologie, I, 182

A Note on Judeo-Persian Copulas
THE STILL USEFUL COLLECTION of historical linguistic material to be found in Paul Horn, Grundriss der neupersischen Etymologie (Strassburg, 1893-photo-reprint 1966) contains numerous references to Judeo-Persian forms as culled from the very few J-P texts available at the end of the 19th century. These were primarily the J-P versions of the prophetic books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel (through Ez 9.4 only) published by Paul de Lagarde in his P…

307 India, as has been given by V. A. Smith, will not help us much. An examination of the impact of military equipment and technology on social structure is a welcome feature of the book, and the subject can be followed up by also considering the impact of society on the military system. Not the least merit of the present book is the eminently readable and elegant style and the concise manner in which it has been written. The tendency to load the…

An Elamite Etymology
This note discusses an Elamite etymology, hitherto unrecognized, to show how certain hypotheses concerning the interpretation of Elamite cuneiform writing can lead to a deeper understanding of Elamite phonology and morphology, and to a more precise identification of particular forms known from Elamite texts. Among the Elamite documents, the royal texts from the Achaemenid period represent a particular dialect that we shall call Royal Achaemenid E…

The Phonology and Morphology of Royal Achaemenid Elamite
The Old Persian /L/ Phoneme
WAS THE OP SYLLABARY an ad hoc invention under the Achaemenids or is it the much eroded survivor of an older and more complete writing system? * This problem has been repeatedly discussed chiefly by reference to the evidence from the Greek sources, from Aramaeo-Pehlevi scribal practice, and from the more direct-though not completely clear-evidence in paragraph 70 of the Bisitun inscription.' The argument offered in this paper is submitted in orde…

In recent years there have appeared in linguistic publications a number of explicit references to the methodology and concepts of mathematical logic. In the abstract of one provocative article, Martin Joos writes, 'Physicists describe speech with continuous mathematics, such as Fourier analysis or the autocorrelation function. Linguists describe language instead, using a discontinuous or discrete mathematics called “linguistics”.' Joos spells out…
