  • Using micro-CT imaging for triaging evidence in a vehicle fire investigation. A case report

Open Access•Charlotte Primeau, D NORMAN et al.•ARTICLE•The Police Journal Theory…•2026

This case report highlights how micro-CT imaging was used to assist in the investigation of a homicide that involved a burnt-out car, with several burnt evidence samples submitted for examination. It is detailed how micro-CT was used for a police investigation to ensure a more effective workflow for triaging evidence. High resolution 2D micro-CT imaging provided quick characterisation of the contents of samples, eliminating the need for full 3D s…

  • Black British Gospel-Pop Crossover

    Mark A Williams, Matthew A Williams•CHAPTER•Black British Gospel Music•2024

The term secularisation was popularised by Max Weber and pertains to the existence of an occidental milieu that does not include God. Secularisation theory proposed that the modernisation of society (through rationalisation and the enlightenment) would bring about a decline in religiosity across the West, leading to ‘entzauberung’ (disenchantment). Eventually, society would be devoid of belief in the transcendent. In his book, A Secular Age, Char…

  • Imaging Hadrian in Britain between Coinage and Sculpture

Open Access•Dario Calomino, Francesca Bologna et al.•ARTICLE•Britannia•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper presents a new approach to an old problem, the provincial reception of the image of Roman emperors. Applying 3D computer modelling, we captured the portrait features of Hadrian as represented on coinage minted for the British province, produced a 3D model from a coin and compared it with the bronze head of Hadrian found in London. The aim was to test the possibility, previously posited by other scholars, that the London portrait might …

  • Not Secular

    Open Access•Mark A Williams•ARTICLE•Religions•2023•References: 26

Secularisation theory proposed that the modernisation of society would bring about a decline in religiosity across the West, leading to 'entzauberung' (disenchantment). Eventually, society would be devoid of belief in the transcendent. Some theorists have challenged this by suggesting (with some qualifying factors) that enchantment better describes the secular age we occupy. Charles Taylor suggests that we can perceive the enchantment of a secula…

  • Creating Meaningful Museums

    Open Access•Ellie King, M Paul Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Visitor Studies•2022

Combining existing knowledge of museum exhibition visitor experience with concepts of User Experience (UX), a model for Museum Exhibition User Experience (MEUX) is presented. Open Access•Ellie King, M Paul Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Curator The Museum Journal•2021

The impact of the COVID‐19 Crisis on museums and galleries has been paramount, with the sector taking on long‐term recovery plans. This paper examines this crisis in the context of temporary exhibition programmes of UK museums, studying online content for 21 museums with exhibitions due to open between March and June 2020. Analysis was conducted, noting how COVID was considered, how content was presented, and discussing the emerging themes of acc…

  • Designing 3-D Prints for Blind and Partially Sighted Audiences in Museums

Paul F Wilson, Susan Griffiths et al.•ARTICLE•Visitor Studies•2020

Modern museum practice embraces equal access for all, but access for blind and partially-sighted (BPS) audience remains problematic given the ocularcentricity of museums. Many museum professionals and BPS visitors remain frustrated by the degree of accessibility on offer. The use of 3-D printed replicas as a handling surrogate represents a solution, allowing BPS visitors to engage tactually with museum content while minimizing risk. However, the …

  • An Early Portuguese Mariner's Astrolabe from the Sodré Wreck‐site, Al Hallaniyah, Oman

    Open Access•David L Mearns, Jason M Warnett et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2019•References: 5

A unique leaded-gunmetal disc decorated with iconic Portuguese markings was recovered in 2014 during archaeological excavations at the Sodr shipwreck site in Al Hallaniyah, Oman. Initially the identity and function of the disc was unknown, although it did possess characteristics suggesting it could be an astrolabe. Laser imaging of the disc post conservation revealed regular scale marks on the limb of its upper right quadrant. Accurate digital me…

  • What Value Can Qualitative Research Add to Quantitative Research Design? An Example From an Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Trial Feasibility Study

    Open Access•Francine Toye, Esther Williamson et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 22

Using an example of qualitative research embedded in a non-surgical feasibility trial, we explore the benefits of including qualitative research in trial design and reflect on epistemological challenges. We interviewed 18 trial participants and used methods of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. Our findings demonstrate that qualitative research can make a valuable contribution by allowing trial stakeholders to see things from alternative per…

  • First Person Experience of Body Transfer in Virtual Reality

Open Access•Mel Slater, Bernhard Spanlang et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2010

BACKGROUND: Altering the normal association between touch and its visual correlate can result in the illusory perception of a fake limb as part of our own body. Thus, when touch is seen to be applied to a rubber hand while felt synchronously on the corresponding hidden real hand, an illusion of ownership of the rubber hand usually occurs. The illusion has also been demonstrated using visuomotor correlation between the movements of the hidden real…
