Exploring LLM Chatbots as Potential Guides to Virtue Ethics
This paper explores Søren Kierkegaard's engagement with virtue ethics. While valuing Aristotle's focus on moral character and practical wisdom, Kierkegaard advanced virtue ethics further. He critiqued the clergy of his time for their hypocrisy, imagining replacing untrustworthy priests with machines delivering sermons and ethical guidance. Revisiting this thought experiment in light of LLMs, the paper explores the role of Kierkegaard’s insights i…
Prior’s big Y and the Idea of Branching Time
In his famous letter to A. N. Prior dated 3 September 1958, Saul Kripke suggested the use of branching time in temporal logic. In this paper, however, it is argued that Prior worked with an idea close to the notion of branching time (‘the big Y’) already the year before he received Kripke’s letter. It is likely that Prior’s findings based on this early study can explain why Prior so quickly accepted the idea of branching time when he received Kri…
The representation, quantification, and nature of genetic information
Current genetics studies often refer to notions from information science. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and structure the different notions of information used in biology, as a step towards developing a taxonomy of information. Within this framework we propose an extension of Floridi’s conceptual model of information. We also make use of the concept of specified information and show that functional information and many other notions o…
A critical discussion of Prior’s philosophical and tense-logical analysis of the ideas of indeterminism and human freedom
Prior’s paradigm for the study of time and its methodological motivation
A. N. Prior’s writings should obviously be studied already for historical reasons. His inventions of modern temporal logic and hybrid logic are clearly important events in the history of logic. But the enduring importance of studying his works also rests on his methodological approach, which remains highly relevant also for systematical reasons. In this paper we argue that Prior’s formulation in the 1950s of a tense-logical paradigm for the study…

Prior’s defence of Hintikka’s theorem. A discussion of Prior’s ‘The logic of obligation and the obligations of the logician’
Time and knowledge
Branching time, indeterminism and tense logic
Peircean diagrams of time
Some very good arguments can be given in favor of the Augustinean wisdom, according to which it is impossible to provide a satisfactory definition of the concept of time. However, even in the absence of a proper definition, it is possible to deal with conceptual problems regarding time. It can be done in terms of analogies and metaphors. In particular, it is attractive to make use of Peirce's diagrams by means of which various kinds of conceptual…

Identifiable Individuals
I want to examine some of the things that Professor N.L. Wilson says about the identity of individuals in his paper on ‘Substances without Substrata’;1 and then I want to raise a few further problems of my own.We can best begin from Wilson’s ‘simple little puzzle’ about Caesar and Antony: ‘What would the world be like if Julius Caesar had all the properties of Mark Antony and Mark Antony had all the properties of Julius Caesar’. 21 Wilson’s own a…
