    Open Access•Maëlle Calandra•ARTICLE•Disasters•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 29

Cyclone Pam swept through the archipelago of Vanuatu on 13–14 March 2015, with wind speeds exceeding those recorded anywhere in the South Pacific since the 1980s. Southern and central parts of the country were particularly affected. Material damage on Tongoa, one of the most afflicted islands, was extensive, but no deaths were reported. During the storm, villagers found shelter in their kitchen, in what is considered locally as a ‘lifeboat’. The …

  • Confronting the Naturalness of Disaster in the Pacific

    C Ballard, Mcdonnell et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Forum•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 38

This introduction sets out some of the key themes addressed by the papers in the special issue on ‘Confronting the Naturalness of Disaster in the Pacific’. Disasters are now widely understood not as ‘natural’ phenomena but as events or processes that unfold at the intersection between natural or artificial hazards and human populations. We review some of the effects of the naturalisation of disaster before turning to the ways in which Pacific dis…

    Open Access•Maëlle Calandra•ARTICLE•Revue d’ethnoécologie•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 3

    Open Access•Maëlle Calandra•ARTICLE•Techniques & culture•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 12
