Tenacious: An Alternative History of Dogs
Across the world, most dogs have always been mongrels or street dogs, yet historians have focused on breeds and pets. This article examines those other ubiquitous and tenacious but neglected dogs to propose an alternative and complementary history. It does so by looking at Latin America and Colombia in three moments: the formation of these dogs as a result of colonialism; the limits to how and ways in which dogs gained distinction before fancy br…
Before Biodiversity: Trajectories of National Parks in Latin America (1930s-1980s)
Almost a century ago, long before biodiversity expressed a scientific value for nature, Latin American countries began establishing national parks. Today, they represent over 6 percent of Latin America's landmass. By considering national park creation across a broad regional span and six crucial decades, this article explains a mode of state formation focused on caring for nature instead of just exploiting it. It examines how national parks expan…

Sharika D. Crawford. The Last Turtlemen of the Caribbean
Wild and trapped: A history of Colombian zoos and its revelations of animal fortunes and State entanglements, 1930s-1990s
This article presents the first history of Colombian zoos and one of the few contributions to the history of these institutions in Latin America. It proposes that in this region's zoos native animals tended to predominate, signaling the increasing transformation of forests and other native ecosystems into croplands and pasturelands, as well as the growing distance between people and natural environments. Colombian zoos additionally underscore the…
Reflections: Environmental History in the Era of Covid-19

Freedom in the Rainforest. The formation of a black peasantry in Colombia's Pacific Coast, 1850-1930
This article reconstructs the basis on which the black peasantry of the Colombian Pacific was formed after the end of slavery. The descendants of slaves managed to become independent producers, rather than a rural proletariat, through access that had not only the land but also to the forest, water and underground. These peasants were not primarily farmers; extracting gold, ivory palm and rubber to sell it to white traders, who exported. In the co…
Conservation Memories: Vicissitudes of a Biodiversity Conservation Project in the Rainforests of Colombia, 1992-1998
Based primarily on personal memories and conversations with participants, this article discusses a turning point in the long history of nature conservation as it played out in one of the biodiversity hot spots of South America. In the mid-1990s, after the Earth Summit in Rio, conservation initiatives moved beyond protected areas and called for the participation of local communities. Proyecto Biopacífico, the first biodiversity conservation projec…
Of the studies that grew out of the 1990s redefinition of Latin American nations as multicultural, most focus on the struggles of indigenous groups and the extension of their rights. Odile Hoffmann’s insightful book centers on black people, bringing together the literature on multiculturalism with that on blackness and race relations. Colombia’s 1991 constitution and the legislation that followed stands out in the Latin American context for conce…

Recordando a Saturio.

Mapping the Colombian Conflict
In the following pages, I present 10 maps that contribute to recent efforts to map the Colombian conflict. They also provide a complement to the articles on Colombia in this special issue of the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. The first two maps are meant simply to give an overview of Colombia's basic geography. The following seven depict the country's armed conflict, and the last shows areas of coca and poppy cultivatio…
