  • Small for gestational age and anthropometric body composition from early childhood to adulthood: The Aboriginal Birth Cohort study

Open Access•Craig Hansen, Betty Davison et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: In Australia the estimated rate of small for gestational age (SGA) births is 9% among non-Indigenous births compared to 14% among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. There is limited research investigating the effect of being born SGA on body composition later in life in Indigenous Australians. Methods: Using data from the Aboriginal Birth Cohort longitudinal study, we compared the body composition of those born SGA to non-SGA by …

  • Improving sexual health for young people: Making sexuality education a priority

    Janet Helmer, K Senior et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2015

How well do young people understand their developing sexuality and what this means? This paper reports on findings from the Our Lives: Culture, Context and Risk project, which investigated sexual behaviour and decision-making in the context of the everyday life experience and aspirations of Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people (16–25 years) in the Northern Territory, Western Australia and in South Australia. Using qualitative data, this pap…

  • Prevalence and validity of self-reported smoking in Indigenous and non-Indigenous young adults in the Australian Northern Territory

Open Access•Mark S Pearce, Kay Mann et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Self-reported smoking prevalence was 68% in the ABC and 14% in the TEC. Among the self-reported non-smokers, the median cotinine levels were higher in the ABC (33 ng/ml) than in the TEC (5 ng/ml), with greater percentages of reported non-smokers in the under 50 ng/ml group in the TEC than in the ABC CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of smoking was much higher in the ABC than in the TEC. The higher cotinine levels in ABC non-smokers may reflect an underesti…

  • Engaging Youth in Sexual Health Research: Refining a "Youth Friendly" Method in the Northern Territory, Australia

    Open Access•Richard Chenhall, Betty Davison et al.•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2013•Cited by: 15•References: 19

This article describes the application and adaptation of body mapping as a tool for exploring sexual health and sexual decision making among young people aged 16-25. It argues that while body mapping engaged youth to discuss general health issues, young people were reluctant to engage with issues related to sexual health, due to feelings of shame and fear of stigma. Sexual health case scenarios were developed and used in conjunction with body-map…

  • Australian Aboriginal Birth Cohort study: Follow-up processes at 20 years

Open Access•Susan Sayers, Gurmeet Singh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC International Health and…•2009

BACKGROUND: In 1987, a prospective study of an Australian Aboriginal Birth Cohort was established focusing on the relationships of fetal and childhood growth with the risk of chronic adult disease. However as the study is being conducted in a highly marginalized population it is also an important resource for cross-sectional descriptive and analytical studies. The aim of this paper is to describe the processes of the third follow up which was con…
