  • Personal persistence

    Open Access•H E Baber•ARTICLE•Theoria•2024

According to perdurantist accounts of persistence, transtemporal aggregates of stages, ‘worms’, are ‘the referents of ordinary terms, members of ordinary domains of quantification, subjects of ordinary predications, and so on...on the stage view...it is instantaneous stages rather than worms that play this role’. I argue the stage theory should be preferred as an account of personal persistence. I consider the way in which four‐dimensionalist acc…

  • What could Jesus do

    Open Access•H E Baber•ARTICLE•International Journal for…•2023

According to many orthodox Christian theologies Jesus is not merely sinless but impeccable: he not only did not sin but could not. This is puzzling because one can only sin by doing something else and, prima face , Jesus can do actions that you or I could do by which we would sin. I suggest that appearances to the contrary, Jesus cannot do a variety of actions that a merely human duplicate could do. His doing sinful actions is compossible with a …

  • Trinity, generality, and dominance

    Open Access•H E Baber•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•2016

I defend a relative identity solution to the identity puzzle posed by the doctrine of the Trinity. It has been argued that relative identity theories which admit absolute identity, such as the account proposed here, do not succeed in saving the doctrine of the Trinity from logical incoherence. I show that this argument fails. Relative identity theories that admit absolute identity are logically conservative, metaphysically innocent, and unproblem…

  • Cohabitation and the Future

    Open Access•H E Baber•ARTICLE•Sociology and Anthropology•2014•References: 2

In cases of fission, on Lewis’ account, distinct individuals share stages prior to fission. There is a sense in which the survival of such ‘cohabiting’ individuals is guaranteed. Had fission not occurred there would have been a single individual in their place? So if they, those cohabiting individuals, exist they must survive fission. To that extent any concern they might have about whether they will survive fission is unwarranted. But only to th…

  • The real presence

    Open Access•H E Baber•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•2013

The doctrine that Christ is really present in the Eucharist appears to entail that Christ's body is not only multiply located but present in different ways at different locations. Moreover, the doctrine poses an even more difficult meta-question: what makes a theological explanation of the Eucharist a ‘real presence’ account? Aquinas's defence of transubstantiation, perhaps the paradigmatic account, invokes Aristotelian metaphysics and the machin…

  • Is Homosexuality Sexuality

    Open Access•H E Baber•ARTICLE•Theology•2004

Cluistians worry about what they take to be the erosion of the Church's traditional code of sexual conduct and, in particular, the emerging consensus that prohibitions on homosexual activity are unwarranted.Their concerns are twofold.First, they worry that according homosexual relationships a status comparable to heterosexual marriage will undermine the prohibitions, practices and social arrangements that support the institution of marriage.Secon…

  • In defence of proselytizing

    Open Access•H E Baber•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•2000

In Ethics in the Sanctuary , Margaret Battin argues that traditional evangelism, directed to promoting religious belief, practice, and affiliation, that is proselytizing, is morally questionable to the extent that it involves unwarranted paternalism in the interests of securing other-worldly benefits for potential converts. I argue that Christian evangelism is justified in order to make the this-worldly benefits of religious belief and practice a…

  • Almost Indiscernible Twins

    H E Baber•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•1992

Distinct objects may be very similar, indeed, almost indiscernible. Moreover, individuals of most sorts are such that they could have been slightly different from the way they are.It would seem to follow that where a pair of objects are, as it were, almost indiscernible twins, one or both could have been slightly different in such a way that, though distinct, they were absolutely indiscernible and thus constituted a counterexample to Identity of I…

  • How Bad Is Rape

    Open Access•H E Baber•ARTICLE•Hypatia•1987•Cited by: 2

I argue that to be compelled to do routine work is to be gravely harmed. Indeed, that pink-collar work is a more serious harm to women than rape. My purpose is to urge politically active feminists and feminist organizations to arrange their priorities accordingly and devote most of their resources to working for the elimination of sex segregation in employment
