The Global Classroom in Action: Thirty Years of International Studies at the University of Technology Sydney
2024 marks a significant milestone for the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) and its successor, the Bachelor of International Studies (BIS), at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS): 30 years of pioneering global education and the fostering of international and transcultural understanding. To commemorate this anniversary in this issue of Portal: Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies, a selection of academic staff, …
A Transcultural Experiment: U.S. Latino Studies at UTS
In 2001, shortly after I joined as a newly minted academic the Institute for International Studies at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), the then founder and Director of the program, Professor David Goodman, approached me to canvas the possibility of a Latino USA Major in the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) degree. These are my reflections on this transcultural experiment in international studies at UTS
Scaffolded Fieldwork Research Projects: An Australian Approach to Study Abroad
Research into university study abroad programs suggests that while students may have some experience of local culture(s) and practices, they may be achieving no more than a superficial understanding of the host society. Alternatives to the standard study abroad models are thus essential to encourage students to engage more deeply with the host society. Research on study abroad programs argues for additional interventions and the provision of clos…
Ibis and the city: Bogan kitsch and the avian revisualization of Sydney
The Australian White Ibis (Ibis) ( Threskiornis molucca ) is one of three endemic Ibis species in Australia. In a short time frame beginning in the 1970s, this species has moved from inland waterways to urban centres along the eastern and southeastern seaboards, Darwin and the Western Australian southwest. Today Ibis are at home in cities across the country, where they thrive on the food waste, water resources and nesting sites supplied by humans…

The Cambridge Companion to Latina/o American Literature
The Cambridge Companion to Latina/o American Literature provides a thorough yet accessible overview of a literary phenomenon that has been rapidly globalizing over the past two decades. It takes an innovative approach that underscores the importance of understanding Latina/o literature not merely as an ethnic phenomenon in the United States, but more broadly as a crucial element of a trans-American literary imagination. Leading scholars in the fi…

The Elián González Discursive Template: Mediating Children in Multiple Spheres of Conflict
The highly publicized Elin Gonzlez custody battle of 1999/2000 was often treated as an unprecedented instance of one child's fate at the hands of state ideologues and mediaapparatuses, this frame of reference determined by the Cold War standoff between Cuba and the USA.However such explanations do not explain why Elin's case-and the lessons it poses for understanding the conflicted mediation of childhood-continues to resonate widely years after h…

Introducing Hyperworld(s): Language, Culture, and History in the Latin American world(s)
This introduction to the January 2008 special edition of PORTAL engages with the processes by which, in the early 21st century—an information age of hypertechnology, post-nationalism, post-Fordism, and dominating transnational media—culture and economy have become fused, and globalizations tend towards the mercantilization, commodification, and privatization of human experience. We recognize that access to the technologies of globalizations is un…
My Bones Shine in the Dark
The autobiographically modulated poetry and prose collection City of God (1994) and other published works by the late Gil Cuadros (1962-96) survive as an important set of AIDS testimonials, the first of their kind in Chicano literary production. This paper explores Cuadros's preoccupation with processes of identificatory signification and corporeal scripting. I regard his writings as a sustained textual response to the multiple signifying systems…
Ilan Stavans's Latino USA: A Cartoon History (Of a Cosmopolitan Intellectual)
Ideology in the Disney Comic.ii That 1971 study targeted the Disney comic as paradigmatic of U.S. cultural imperialism, a mass-cultural form capable of corrupting Third World youth with nefarious "American" capitalist and bourgeois individualist values.Stavans dismisses this argument as simplistic, tired, and tied to a bygone era of left-right Latin American antagonisms.Rather, Stavans insists, the worldwide popularity of the comic medium confirm…

Killer Crónicas: Bilingual Memories
The Wounded Body of Proletarian Homosexuality in Pedro Lemebel's Loco afán
In his two collections of chronicles, La esquina es mi corazon (1995) and Loco afdn: Cronicas de Sidario (1996), Pedro Lemebel describes a Santiago not depicted in news bulletins and in the discourses of the Chilean economic miracle, a Santiago populated by beings marginalized as much by their socioeconomic position as by their sexual orientation. From his perspective as the homosexual other, Lemebel redraws the map of Santiago from its margins, …

Policing the picaresque: Lazarillo de TormesandEl buscónon trial
What is the picaresque? In our era, one typical response to this question has been provided by R. Bjornson in his The Picaresque Hero in European Fiction. Bjornson, speaking about Lazarillo de Tormes, claims that the book represents the fusion of two literary conventions, 'the pseudoautobiographical perspective and the panorama of representative types', which although 'not necessarily associated with the picaresque myth ... almost invariably appe…
