  • Equal price for equal place? Demand-driven racial discrimination in the housing market

Open Access•Anthony Lepinteur, Giorgia Menta et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Science and Urban…•2025

We presented participants to an online study in Luxembourg with fictitious real-estate advertisements , tasking them to appraise the described properties. A random subset was also shown sellers’ surnames, strongly framed to signal their origins. All else equal, sellers with sub-Saharan African surnames were systematically offered lower prices — amounting to an appraisal penalty of EUR 20,000. This figure is highly heterogeneous and can amount up …

  • Working from home and well-being during the pandemic and beyond

Open Access•Anna Elena Kornadt, CATHERINE E BOWEN et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our analysis offers a differentiated picture on within- and between-person dynamics of WFH and well-being over the course of the pandemic and beyond and can inform the discussion how individuals, organizations, and societies can prepare for a future in which WFH plays a more prominent role

  • Real Assets and Subjective Well-Being

Open Access•Zuzana Brokešová, Andrej Cupák et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2025•Referencias: 7

This paper examines the relationship between household real assets and life satisfaction in Slovakia, using microdata from the 2017 wave of the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS). We find a robust positive association between the value of real assets and life satisfaction. To assess whether this relationship is driven by relative, rather than purely absolute, effects, we make use of a unique feature of the Slovak HFCS: interviewer pa…

  • Just another cog in the machine? A worker‐level view of robotization and tasks

Open Access•M Nikolova, Anthony Lepinteur et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2025•Referencias: 65

Technological change has led to a decline in the share of routine and physical jobs, and a rise in the share of abstract and social ones at the economy level. However, much less is known about how these trends unfold at the individual level. Do workers' tasks become more or less routine and physical? Do workers shift towards more social and abstract activities? This paper is the first to explore these questions in the context of robotization. We …

  • I can't forget about U

    Open Access•Andrew E Clark, Anthony Lepinteur•ARTICLE•Economica•2025•Referencias: 34

It is well known that unemployment leaves scars after re‐employment, but does this scarring effect persist even after retirement? We analyse European data on retirees from the SHARE panel, and show that the wellbeing of the retired continues to reflect the unemployment that they experienced over their working life. These scarring effects are somewhat smaller for older retirees, but larger for those who arguably had higher expectations regarding t…

Open Access•Anthony Lepinteur, Andrew E Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Economics•2024

In this paper, we evaluate the link between job insecurity and one of the most important decisions that individuals take: homeownership. The 1999 rise in the French Delalande tax on firms that laid off older workers produced an unexpected exogenous rise in job insecurity for younger workers. A difference‐in‐differences analysis of panel data from the European Community Household Panel shows that this greater job insecurity significantly reduced t…

  • Loneliness during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Alessio Rebechi, Anthony Lepinteur et al.•ARTICLE•Economics & Human Biology•2024

We use quarterly panel data from the COME-HERE survey covering five European countries to analyse three facets of the experience of loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, in terms of prevalence, loneliness peaked in April 2020, followed by a U-shape pattern in the rest of 2020, and then remained relatively stable throughout 2021 and 2022. We then establish the individual determinants of loneliness and compare them to those found in the l…

We use annual data on over 150 countries between 2005 and 2018 to look at the relationship between subjective well-being (both cognitive and affective) and the Human Development Index (HDI). The HDI appears to be more closely related to cognitive than affective well-being. We also consider the relationships between the three HDI components (the Income, Health, and Education Indices) and well-being, and find that, on average, the Income Index has …

  • Gender, loneliness and happiness during Covid-19

Open Access•Anthony Lepinteur, Andrew E Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral and…•2022

We analyse a measure of loneliness from a representative sample of German individuals interviewed in both 2017 and at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Both men and women felt lonelier during the COVID-19 pandemic than they did in 2017. The pandemic more than doubled the gender loneliness gap: women were lonelier than men in 2017, and the 2017-2020 rise in loneliness was far larger for women. This rise is mirrored in life-satisfacti…

  • Economic insecurity and political preferences

Open Access•Walter Bossert, Andrew E Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Economic Papers•2022

Economic insecurity has attracted growing attention, but there is no consensus as to its definition. We characterize a class of individual economic-insecurity measures based on the time profile of economic resources. We apply this economic-insecurity measure to political-preference data in the USA, UK, and Germany. Conditional on current economic resources, economic insecurity is associated with both greater political participation (support for a…

  • Maternal genetic risk for depression and child human capital

Open Access•Giorgia Menta, Anthony Lepinteur et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Economics•2022

We here address the causal relationship between the maternal genetic risk for depression and child human capital using UK birth-cohort data. We find that an increase of one standard deviation (SD) in the maternal polygenic risk score for depression reduces their children's cognitive and non-cognitive skill scores by 5 to 7% of a SD throughout adolescence. Our results are robust to a battery of sensitivity tests addressing, among others, concerns …

  • Pandemic Policy and Life Satisfaction in Europe

Open Access•Andrew E Clark, Anthony Lepinteur•ARTICLE•Review of Income and Wealth•2021

We use data from the COME-HERE longitudinal survey collected by the University of Luxembourg to assess the effects of the policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic on life satisfaction in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden over the course of 2020. Policy responses are measured by the Stringency Index and the Economic Support Index from the Blavatnik School of Government. Stringency is systematically associated with lower life satisfaction, …

  • A Natural Experiment on Job Insecurity and Fertility in France

Andrew E Clark, Anthony Lepinteur•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2020

Job insecurity can have wide-ranging consequences outside of the labor market. A 1999 rise in the French layoff tax paid by large private firms when they laid off older workers made younger workers less secure; this insecurity reduced their fertility by 3.7 percentage points (with a 95% confidence interval between 0.7 and 6.6 percentage points). Reduced fertility is found only at the intensive margin: job insecurity reduces family size but not th…

    Open Access•Alexandre Georgieff, Anthony Lepinteur•ARTICLE•Oxford Economic Papers•2018

This paper assesses the causal effect of partial employment protection on workersâ€TM subjective job security via the perceived probability of layoff. We consider the rise in the French Delalande tax, which is paid by private firms if they lay off older workers. This reform was restricted to large firms and therefore allows us to use a difference-in-differences strategy. In ECHP data, we find that the change in the perceived probability of layoff…
