Beyond ‘feminist fatigue’: Youth voices on relationships and sex education in the anti-gender era
This article explores adolescents’ perspectives on relationships and sex education (RSE) in Spain, a context marked by a significant disconnect between robust state policy and inconsistent school-level practice, and shaped by the rise of anti-gender movements. Theoretically, the article introduces and advances the concept of ‘feminist fatigue’ as an analytical tool, connecting it to affect theory and Sara Ahmed’s notion of the ‘feminist killjoy’ …

This life history account illustrates the covert politics of sabotage, purging, and the defeat of defecting and rival factions that occurred within the United Farm Workers in Texas. I draw on Robert Michels' framework of competing leadership to illustrate the mechanisms established leadership can use to sabotage, purge, and the eliminate rival leaders, in particular maverick and threatening leaders. This case study draws on the history of the Tex…

The politics of energy privatization in Latin America: Contours and directions
Prescribed as a measure from international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and networks of creditors to manage debt, privatization of energy in Latin America has been a key policy from the Washington Consensus since the 1980s into the current period. The waves of privatization and neoliberal reforms that have swept Latin America during the 1980s and through the 1990s and 2000s have also brought with them massive resistance f…

Relationships and sex education in the age of anti-gender movements: What challenges for democracy
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) has been subject to controversy historically and several studies have analysed the challenges and barriers to delivering it in schools. Recently, however, a new global phenomenon has sharpening debate with the emergence of anti-gender movements and their discourse on ‘gender ideology’. The focus now is less on the issue of delivering RSE in school, than the possibility of there being such a thing as RSE. This…
Between community and sectarianism: Calling Out and Negotiated Discipline in Prefigurative Politics
This paper examines how activists negotiate tensions in disciplining offenders who transgress norms in prefigurative politics. Through the disciplinary process of calling-out, activists negotiate a key tension between building a community that is extensive and inclusive or intensive and exclusive for its members. Derived from consciousness raising groups in New Left activism, call-outs are a rhetorical tactic that expose oppressive acts in etique…

Alinskyism and Tactical Dexterity: Building the Texas Chicano Movement, 1965–1978
This article examines internal processes that helped Alinskyism become a hegemonic style of organizing among Chicanos in Texas over New-Left and Marxist styles. I argue that Alinskyite Chicanos outmaneuvered rival activists through what I call tactical dexterity. Tactical dexterity illuminates how actors transpose cultural schemas with organizational knowledge to craft tactics that build political power, negotiate status, and expunge rivals to co…

Excluded Within: The (Un)Intelligibility of Radical Political Actors by Sina Kramer
Sina Kramer opens with three stories: the story of Antigone, the occluded story of Claudette Colvin who preceded Rosa Parks in refusing to give up her seat in Montgomery, and the Los Angeles 1992 Watts Riots/Rebellion. These accounts help Kramer establish their guiding question: why do figures like Antigone, Claudette, and the collective action of the riots/rebellion become excluded and read as unintelligible forms of political agency? To illumin…

Coeducar las Relaciones Afectivosexuales para Promover la Igualdad Sexual y de Género y la Justicia Social
Education, notably the formal one that happens in the school, is one of the main engines of change of the society. Hence, those who commit our work with the promotion of social change towards sexual and gender equality, let us locate this claim on education (especially the scholar one). In line with this, this article begins by analysing the historical journey from the segregating single-sex school, through the mixed school, to coeducation as a s…

La investigación acción educativa en educación afectivosexual: Una metodología para el cambio social
