Connecting Territories
The book analyses from a comparative perspective the exploration of territories, the histories of their inhabitants, and local natural environments during the long eighteenth century. The eleven chapters look at European science at home and abroad as well as at global scientific practices and the involvement of a great variety of local actors in the processes of mapping and recording. Due to an European overproduction of food, the massive input of labour by the mountain farmer is no longer profitable. As producers of environment and standard-bearers of landscapes, however, farmers are sorely missed in the Alps today. By the 1980s geographers were pointing out that ecological problems in the Alps can be t…
Geschichte der Konsumgesellschaft (review)
In an attempt to enhance our understanding of consumer society, Wolfgang König sets out to explore the relationship between the spheres of production and consumption. Consumption should not be understood as a complementary term to production, he contends; rather, the two should be seen as relational concepts, and he seeks to investigate the complex interplay between both sides of the affluent society. The longstanding hegemonic status of the prod…
