    Open Access•Rachel T Buxton, Amber L Pearson et al.•ARTICLE•Geo Geography and Environment•2023•References: 4

Natural environments provide a myriad of health benefits, yet the role of species diversity within these spaces remains underexplored. Bird diversity may yield mental health benefits for humans, through birdsong or feelings of connection to nature. In an initial effort to establish whether bird diversity may be linked with human health in a US context and to test the consistency in such trends from year to year, we combine widely available commun…

  • Ethical ecosurveillance

Open Access•Nathan Young, Dominique G Roche et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2022

Ecosurveillance has proliferated in recent years, generating vast amounts of data on the natural environment. Ecosurveillance also has significant potential impacts on humans; therefore, researchers and policymakers need new conceptual tools to anticipate and mitigate any negative effects. Surveillance studies is an interdisciplinary field in the social sciences, providing a number of insights and practical lessons for predicting and managing the…

  • Balancing research, monitoring, and action to recover Canada’s species at risk

    Open Access•Rachel T Buxton, Shamri Hamit et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2022•References: 3

Despite accelerating biodiversity loss, conservation efforts suffer from serious resource deficiencies. This requires conservation managers to strike a challenging balance between direct action, which is needed to avoid further biodiversity loss, and research and monitoring, which provide the information needed for more effective action. Here, we explore different types of management tasks in action plans for legally protected species at risk of …

    Open Access•Nancy Fullman, Jamal A Yearwood et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BACKGROUND: A key component of achieving universal health coverage is ensuring that all populations have access to quality health care. Examining where gains have occurred or progress has faltered across and within countries is crucial to guiding decisions and strategies for future improvement. We used the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) to assess personal health-care access and quality with the Healthc…

    Open Access•Nancy Fullman, Ryan M Barber et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: The UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are grounded in the global ambition of "leaving no one behind". Understanding today's gains and gaps for the health-related SDGs is essential for decision makers as they aim to improve the health of populations. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016), we measured 37 of the 50 health-related SDG indicators over the period 1990-2016 for 188…

Open Access•Mohsen Naghavi, Amanuel Alemu Abajobir et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: Monitoring levels and trends in premature mortality is crucial to understanding how societies can address prominent sources of early death. The Global Burden of Disease 2016 Study (GBD 2016) provides a comprehensive assessment of cause-specific mortality for 264 causes in 195 locations from 1980 to 2016. This assessment includes evaluation of the expected epidemiological transition with changes in development and where local patterns …

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) provides a comprehensive assessment of risk factor exposure and attributable burden of disease. By providing estimates over a long time series, this study can monitor risk exposure trends critical to health surveillance and inform policy debates on the importance of addressing risks in context. METHODS: We used the comparative risk assessment framework dev…

BACKGROUND: Detailed assessments of mortality patterns, particularly age-specific mortality, represent a crucial input that enables health systems to target interventions to specific populations. Understanding how all-cause mortality has changed with respect to development status can identify exemplars for best practice. To accomplish this, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) estimated age-specific and …

BACKGROUND: Measurement of changes in health across locations is useful to compare and contrast changing epidemiological patterns against health system performance and identify specific needs for resource allocation in research, policy development, and programme decision making. • Diatom, Pollen, and Chemical Evidence of Postglacial Climatic Change at Big Lake, South-Central British Columbia, Canada

    Open Access•James R Bennett, Joseph R Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

Postglacial climatic conditions were inferred from cores taken from Big Lake in southern British Columbia. Low concentrations of nonarboreal pollen and pigments near the base of the core suggest that initial conditions were cool. Increases in both aquatic and terrestrial production suggest warmer and moister conditions until ∼8500 cal yr B.P. Hyposaline diatom assemblages, increases in nonarboreal pollen, and increased concentrations of pigments …

  • Peace profile

    Open Access•James R Bennett•ARTICLE•Peace Review•1999

The recent killings of children and teachers at schools in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Littleton, Colorado, and elsewhere have caused a clamor of diagnoses and denunciations over the origins of school violence and our national violence. Drugs, guns, parents, schools, television and video games are blamed. Even children are condemned, and a cry has arisen to prosecute youth as adult criminals. From President Clinton, who declared that “killing is wrong,”…
