  • El Perú-Waka’

Keith Eppich, Damien B Marken et al.•BOOK•El Perú-Waka’•2024

  • Stone on stone

    Open Access•Rachel A Horowitz, Damien B Marken et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•References: 31

Crafting is often assumed to have been a 'dirty' and hence low-status activity: elites managed the supply of materials or distribution of the products, lower-status workers undertook the hard graft. Here, the authors present an in situ stoneworking toolkit from El Perú-Waka' in the central Maya lowlands of Guatemala. Recovered from a high-status neighbourhood, the tools indicate the involvement of elite crafters in the working of various types of…

  • Building an Archaeology of Maya Urbanism

M Charlotte Arnauld, Damien B Marken•BOOK•Building an Archaeology of Maya…•2023

After decades of debate, most scholars accept Classic Maya centers as the hearts of spatially expansive, low-density urban settlements. The recent incorporation of models derived from comparative urban research is a positive step for Maya archaeology, since it confronts the view that Maya cities were not only political capitals but also true urban phenomena, and must be treated as such. This volume seeks to explore the dynamics of Maya cities prima…

  • Residential size and volume differentiation across urban zones at El Perú-Waka', Peten, Guatemala

    Open Access•Damien B Marken•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2023•Cited by: 1

Located at the western edge of the Classic Maya heartland, El Peru-Waka' was one of the most densely aggregated urban cores in the Lowlands. With households packed next to each other, it can be difficult to define where one ends and another begins. Nevertheless, survey and excavation data suggest that differences in household provisioning and generational cycling created considerable variation in household wealth across the city. This paper emplo…

  • Combining Survey, Soil Coring, and GIS Methods to Improve Reservoir Capacity Estimates in the Maya Lowlands

    Open Access•Damien B Marken, Matthew C Ricker et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2022•References: 9

This study reports water capacity estimates for four reservoirs within the Classic Maya city of El Perú-Waka’, Guatemala. Combining field survey, soil analysis, and a variety of GIS interpolation methods, it illustrates ways to more fully quantify a challenging resource—water—and its availability using an interdisciplinary approach. This is accomplished by comparing surface interpolation methods for estimating reservoir capacities to demonstrate …

  • Ancient lowland Maya complexity as revealed by airborne laser scanning of northern Guatemala

    Open Access•Marcello A Canuto, Francisco Estrada-Belli et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2018

Classic Maya civilization in detail Lidar (a type of airborne laser scanning) provides a powerful technique for three-dimensional mapping of topographic features. It is proving to be a valuable tool in archaeology, particularly where the remains of structures may be hidden beneath forest canopies. Canuto et al. present lidar data covering more than 2000 square kilometers of lowland Guatemala, which encompasses ancient settlements of the Classic M…

  • Conceptualizing the Spatial Dimensions of Classic Maya States

    Damien B Marken•CHAPTER•Classic Maya Polities of the…•2015

Problems relating to the size, juxtaposition, and boundedness of social integration in the eastern lowlands remind us that the social scientist must be theoretically and empirically equipped to deal systematically with scale factors. He or she must be able to detect relationships among variables operating at the household level, through the local and regional levels, up to the 250,000 km 2 macroregion, and in Mesoamerica as a whole. One must see ho…
