Seeing the City Digitally: Processing Urban Space and Time
The argument that many cities are now digitally mediated is an increasingly familiar one.The social, experiential and physical spaces of a city are more and more often designed, defined, navigated and experienced with digital data shared with platforms. But from its app icon to its interface to its advertising campaigns, every platform deploys a wide range of imagery, and most successful social media platforms are based on sharing images. This book…
A Walk Down the Shore| Sahilde 1 Gezinti
A Walk Down the Shore' is a 20-minute video produced as part of the 'Visualising memories of violence and wellbeing in Istanbul' project. It is based on the audio-visual material produced by residents living in redevelopment neighbourhoods in the Anatolian part of Istanbul. It is a standalone research output and, at the same time, presents the core platform of processing the visual-, textual- and movement-based (walking) material generated during…
A Walk down the Shore: A visual geography of ordinary violence in Istanbul
In this paper, I examine where violence appears and how it is made sense of in Istanbul's everyday settings of construction and renewal. I develop a visual methodology and utilise ordinary violences as a framework to map fear and memories as extended human material. The discussion is based on a filmic iteration of audio-visual material on memories of violence interrogated through ways of doing and senses of belonging, security and use of space in…
Wearable cameras, in-visible breasts: Intimate spatialities of feminist research with wearable camcorders in Istanbul
Video-based wearable technology such as actioncams and optical head mount devices lead to various kinds of visualities and interrelations between camera vision, bodily visibility, immersive viewing and public visibility of the body-wearing-the-camera. These interrelations are not neutral and in order to claim wearable visual technology's potential for critical, feminist research, it is essential to problematise the contexts and frictions that pre…

Landscapes of Music in Istanbul: A Cultural Politics of Place and Exclusion
Everyday articulations of music, place, urban politics, and inclusion/exclusion are powerfully present in Istanbul. This volume analyzes landscapes of music, community, and exclusion across a century and a half. An interdisciplinary group of scholars and artists presents four case studies: the rembetika, the music of the Asiks, the Zakir/Alevi tradition, and hip-hop, in Beyoglu, Üsküdar, the gentrifying Sulukule neighborhood, and across the metro…
