Thucydides and Crowds
This essay considers Thucydides’ treatments of the crowd or mob in the context of his analysis of democratic politics in ancient Athens. Scholars have often located in Thucydides a critique of the crowd familiar from ancient philosophical accounts of democracy and a corresponding call for leadership that amounts to crowd control. Close attention to Thucydides’ portrayal of Athenian democratic politics complicates matters. While he indeed worries …

Silence and Democracy: Athenian Politics in Thucydides’ History
"The role of elites vis-a-vis the mass public in the construction and successful functioning of democracy has long been of central interest to political theorists. In Silence and Democracy, John Zumbrunnen explores this theme in Thucydides' famous history of the Peloponnesian War as a way of focusing our thoughts about this relationship in our own modern democracy."--BOOK JACKET.

Fantasy, Irony, and Economic Justice in Aristophanes'AssemblywomenandWealth
In his final two surviving plays,AssemblywomenandWealth, Aristophanes turns his comic art toward a consideration of the possibilities of radical economic change. His presentation of those possibilities has been read as either indulging in fantasy or as ironically reinforcing the economic status quo. This essay argues that the two plays in fact work to instill in their audience a complex and challenging sensibility that holds fantasy and irony in …
Elite Domination and the Clever Citizen: Aristophanes’ Archarnians and Knights
Aristophanes has often been read as a conservative who was nostalgic for the days before the advent of radical democracy in Athens. This article offers a more complex reading, centering on the portrayal of ordinary citizens in Archarnians and Knights Focusing on their “cleverness,” Aristophanes recognizes both the potential of ordinary citizens and their limitations as heroes in the struggle against elite domination of democratic politics. This c…
Courage in the Face of Reality: Nietzsche's Admiration for Thucydides
In Twilight of the Idols Nietzsche describes Thucydides as his recreation from and cure for Platonism. He attributes to Thucydides "courage in the face of reality" as well as "self control" and "control over things." In this article, I explore Nietzsche's admiration for Thucydides. I begin by considering Nietzsche's reliance upon the austere artistry of the History for relief from Platonism. I then turn to consider three key terms in Nietzsche's …
