The Standards of Mesopotamia in the Third and Fourth Millennia BCE
Standards are represented in the visual culture throughout Mesopotamian history. Renate Marian van Dijk-Coombes examines the standards of the third and fourth millennia BCE and details which standards are recorded in the visual repertoire over time.
Standards of Mesopotamia in the Third and Fourth Millennia BCE
Depictions of standards form a fundamental part of the visual repertoire of ancient Mesopotamia. These depictions can offer great insight into the thought world of the peoples with which they are associated, because different standards were associated with different deities, and could be found in multiple contexts. In this book, Renate Marian van Dijk-Coombes examines the standards which are represented in the visual culture of the third and four…
Revisiting the 'kriegerischer Gott' of the Akkadian Period
Boehmer's Die Entwicklung der Glyptik während der Akkad-Zeit (1965), although nearly 60 years old, is still the major work on the cylinder seals of the Akkadian Period (2334-2150 BCE). It examines different themes and motifs depicted on the cylinder seals during this period. One of the figures which Boehmer discusses is the 'kriegerischer Gott', or martial god. Boehmer records this 'kriegerischer Gott' as being depicted on only eight cylinder sea…
“Lady of battle, his beloved spouse”
Inana/Ištar is the Mesopotamian goddess of war and sexual love. These spheres are both fundamentally physical and corporeal, with the body playing an intrinsic role in both. This paper looks at how the body of Inana/Ištar manifests and is manifested by her two main spheres of influence from the Jemdet Nasr until the Old Babylonian Period. This is done by examining textual evidence, specifically royal inscriptions and mythological and religious co…
Mesopotamian Gods and the Bull
In Mesopotamia, gods were associated with the bull from at least the Early Dynastic Period until the Neo-Babylonian or Chaldean Period. This relationship took on many forms – the bull could serve as the god’s divine animal, the god could be likened to the bull, or he could actually take on the form of the beast. In this paper, the various gods identified with or related to the bull will be identified and studied in order to identify which specifi…
Desde El Cielo Al Inframundo. Reflexiones Sobre Las Representaciones Corporales De Inanna Y Dumuzi a Partir De La Evidencia Iconográfica Y Textual
Portrait of a Ruler
The most famous ruler of the Second Dynasty of Lagash during the twenty-second century B.C.E. is Gudea, who is immortalised in approximately twenty surviving statues. By contrast, only four known statues of Gudea’s son and heir, Ur-Ningirsu, have survived to the present day, although this is still an impressive amount of sculpture in the round for any Mesopotamian ruler. One of these statues survives only as a fragment of a shoulder. Each of the …
