On why history is never finished: Puységur, animal magnetism, and the importance of collective scholarship
For several decades I (A.C.) have been interested in the origins and evolution of psychodynamic psychology and psychotherapy in the West.I have long realized that the Marquis de Puysgur was a central figure in the narrative, but in more recent years, I came to see that he is more: He is the unique originator of the vision of the human psyche upon which that narrative depends. My view was solidified when I came across a copy of his foundational boo…
Privacy by Design for the Internet of Things: Building accountability and security
Privacy by design is a proactive approach that promotes privacy and data protection compliance throughout project lifecycles when storing or accessing personal data. The Marquis de Puységur and the psychological turn in the west

Although the sustainability of development is one of the most important problems facing the world, it has received little attention from the capability approach. This article asks whether the capability approach has anything to offer the debate that has continued for over a quarter of a century. Answering positively, the article outlines a legitimate freedom approach as a fruitful way forward. The approach draws on Thomas Scanlon's contractualist…

"Automatism" and the emergence of dynamic psychiatry
This article is about the clash of two explanatory paradigms, each attempting to account for the same data of human experience. In the first half of the nineteenth century, physiologists investigated reflex actions and applied a recently coined word, "automatism," to describe actions which, although seeming to arise from higher centers, actually result from automatic reaction to sensory stimuli. Experiments with spinal reflexes led to the investi…
