Getting Out in Front of the Owl of Minerva Problem
On the Normativity of Presumptions
On a Whatelian conception, a presumption is a "supposition ... [that] must stand good until some sufficient reason is adduced against it." This view may be understood as operationalizing a distinct quality of warrant for the acceptability of claims. Against this Whatelian conception, Kauffeld offers an account on which "ordinary presumptions are inferences based on suppositions regarding the risk of resentment persons face should they fail to liv…

The importance of belief in argumentation
A theory of presumption for everyday argumentation
The paper considers contemporary models of presumption in terms of their ability to contribute to a working theory of presumption for argumentation. Beginning with the Whatelian model, we consider its contemporary developments and alternatives, as proposed by Sidgwick, Kauffeld, Cronkhite, Rescher, Walton, Freeman, Ullmann-Margalit, and Hansen. Based on these accounts, we present a picture of presumptions characterized by their nature, function, …
Geography, private costs and uptake of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm in a remote rural area
Uptake of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm in is remote and rural setting was high in comparison with previous studies, and this applied across all settlement types. Geographical location did not affect uptake, most likely due to the outreach approach adopted. Private and NHS costs were highest in very remote settings but still compared favourably with other published studies
Departmental Boundaries within the Corporate Body of Theory
This article argues that Quine's holistic and naturalized semantics provides an inadequate account of the foundations of logical expressions and misrepresents the internal structure of theories. By considering a Quinean model of theoretical revision, I identify the status and foundation holism provides to the propositions of logic. I contend that a central tenet of Quinean holism-the Revisability Doctrine-cannot be held consistently, and that the…

Prevalence Study of Concurrent Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Patients Attending Primary Care Services in Scotland
The increasing use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) by the general population1–5 reflects a potentially positive involvement with self-care. This report describes the prevalence of CAM use in patients attending 6 different practices in Scotland. The findings indicate that CAM use in primary care attenders is even greater than in the general population
The Sanctuary of Apollo at Pompeii
Two trenches were excavated in the courtyard of the Sanctuary of Apollo at Pompeii to determine whether the precinct was planted as a temple garden and to explore the stratigraphic sequence of activities predating the eruption in A.D. 79. In addition to evidence suggesting the existence of plantings, the stratigraphy and finds indicate that cisterns in front of the temple were demolished and the courtyard restructured in the late first century B.…
