Zulu Warriors
‘They Must Be Humbled and Subdued’
For seven decades, the British attempted to close the eastern frontier to meet white settler demands for land, labour, and security at the expense of the amaXhosa and other Africans. This chapter describes Britain's aggressive approach to frontier warfare that targeted civilian lives in order to subdue the amaXhosa. It examines the tactics and/or strategies that the British and the amaXhosa employed during the frontier wars.

Between 1779 and 1853 eight wars had been fought along the eastern frontier that pitted white settlers, along with British troops and their African allies, against the amaXhosa people. In EmaXhoseni (the land of the amaXhosa), fears of a renewed war against the amaXhosa people began to spread as rumors of the mythical black conspiracy began to circulate.
