Designing citizen renewable energy projects for women
Citizen renewable energy projects address the growing need for scaling up renewable energy generation. Considering the underrepresentation of women in energy transition topics, we investigate women's intention to participate in such projects, specifically which factors are most impactful for motivating women as compared to men. We employ a stated choice approach to assess the impact of a variety of variables including energy source, type of organ…
Doing gender in energy communities
Equitable renewable energy strategies must prioritize inclusivity and address energy poverty among marginalized groups. • Dismantling barriers and disrupting gendered structures are essential for ensuring equal opportunities. • Due to lack of equality, doing gender based on male superior and female subordinate can take place in energy communities. • Implementing targeted initiatives promotes gender equality and diversification within energy commu…
For the climate, my friends, or my region? An experimental field trial for prosumer engagement with peer-to-peer energy trading in Austria
Collective, citizen-led approaches to energy systems are key to reducing humanity's climate impact. Crucial for their success is the engagement of energy prosumers, i.e., citizens that produce energy. This paper investigates how to best activate the identities of prosumers to participate in peer-to-peer energy trading. In collaboration with the OurPower cooperative in Austria, an experimental trial was set up: 8713 households equipped with photov…
Evidence behind the narrative
Energy Communities are playing an ever greater role in the European renewable energy transition. As an instrument for citizen-led transformation, they are associated not only with economic and environmental, but also with social benefits. However, it is unclear whether Energy Communities in Europe deliver on the positive social impact they promise. In this paper, we analyze the conceptual background of the social impact associated with Energy Com…
How to make energy efficiency labels more effective
Energy efficiency labels have become an important tool in promoting environmentally friendly products. This paper provides insights into how to enhance the impact of energy efficiency labels in middle-income countries. Discrete choice experiments were conducted in Ghana (N = 876) and the Philippines (N = 797), examining whether appealing to attitude functions (the goals served by attitudes) can increase the effectiveness of energy efficiency labe…
Dyadic judgments based on conflicting samples
The present research demonstrates a so far unrecognized impediment of group performance, metacognitive myopia (Fiedler, 2012). Judges and decision‐makers follow the given samples of information uncritically and neglect the metacognitive assessment of the samples' validity. Applying this notion to dyadic judgments, we instructed dyads to jointly estimate conditional probabilities p (Win|A) and p (Win|B) of Lotteries A and B. One person per dyad ex…
Metacognitive myopia and the overutilization of misleading advice
Previous research on advice taking has explained the failure to exploit collective wisdom in terms of the egocentric underweighting of advice provided by independent others. The present research is concerned with an opposite and more radical source of irrational advice taking, namely, the failure to critically assess the validity of advice due to metacognitive myopia. Participants could use the advice of one or two experts when estimating health …
Show me (more than) the money! Assessing the social and psychological dimensions to energy efficient lighting in Kenya
Despite economic, social and environmental benefits, the uptake of energy-saving compact fluorescent lamp light bulbs (CFLs) in Kibera, an informal settlement in Nairobi, remains low. We conducted a randomized controlled field experiment involving 651 Kibera residents assessing whether the joint impact of monetary incentives and behavioral interventions (pre-commitment and simplified information highlighting CFL benefits) could increase CFL uptak…
Stereotypes as Pseudocontingencies
We introduce a heuristic called pseudocontingencies (PCs) as an alternative account of various stereotyping phenomena. PCs give rise to the expectation that attributes are correlated based solely on asymmetries in attribute base rates. Attributes that are encountered frequently and attributes that are encountered rarely are perceived to be correlated with each other. Such differences in information densities are typical of many stereotyped target…
Pseudocontingencies in Consumer Choice
Building on theorizing about contingency inferences, the present research deals with the impact of product category prevalence on consumer choice. We argue that a category's prevalence in the choice set can signal high quality, but the validity depends on the aggregate quality of the choice set. With ever more low‐quality products in the set, high prevalence should increasingly signal poor rather than high quality. When choosing from a poor‐quali…
Money and Thinking
The idea of money reminds consumers of personal strength and resources. Such cues have been found to increase the level of mental construal. Consequently, it was hypothesized and found in five experiments that reminders of money trigger abstract (vs. concrete) mental construals. Participants were primed with money or money-unrelated concepts. Money primes caused a preference for abstract over concrete action identifications (experiment 1), instig…
