You can still have dreams for your child’: Filipino young people’s lived experiences of parenthood
This study aimed to explore Filipino young people's lived experiences of parenthood. We employed narrative analysis of 27 photo elicitation and semi-structured interviews with 10 Filipino adolescent mothers (aged 15–19) and five young fathers (aged 18–24). We found that young parents developed constructions of 'good' mothers and fathers, invoking discourses of responsibility, sacrifice, and 'intergenerational repair' as they transitioned into the…
Partnership-defined quality approach to companionship during labour and birth in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea: A mixed-methods study
Companionship during labour and birth is a critical component of quality maternal and newborn care, resulting in improved care experiences and better birth outcomes. Little is known about the preferences and experiences of companionship in Papua New Guinea (PNG), and how it can be implemented in a culturally appropriate way. The aim of this study was to describe perspectives and experiences of women, their partners and health providers regarding …
Moving from community-based to health centre-based management: Impact on urban community health worker performance in Ethiopia
Community health worker (CHW) performance is influenced by the way in which management arrangements are configured vis-a-vis the community and health services. While low-/middle-income contexts are changing, the literature provides few examples of country efforts to strategically modify management arrangements to support evolving CHW roles (e.g. chronic disease care) and operating environments (e.g. urbanization). This paper aims to understand th…
Direct’ and ‘instant’: The role of digital technology and social media in young Filipinos’ intimate relationships
Young people today grow up in a social landscape in which digital technology and social media are ubiquitous in daily life and interpersonal relations, including intimate (romantic and sexual) relationships. This study sought to study Filipino young people's relationship motivations and contexts in the digital age. We found that digital technology and social media are transforming the way Filipino young people approach and behave in intimate rela…
Progress towards reducing sociodemographic disparities in breastfeeding outcomes in Indonesia: A trend analysis from 2002 to 2017
There were considerable improvements in breastfeeding practices in Indonesia during a period of sustained policy reform to regulate breastfeeding and community support of breastfeeding, but these were not distributed uniformly across socioeconomic, occupation and geographic subgroups. Concerted efforts are needed to further reduce inequities in breastfeeding practice through both targeted and population-based strategies
The distinctive roles of urban community health workers in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review of the literature
Addressing urban health challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) has been hampered by lack of evidence on effective mechanisms for delivering health services to the poor. The urban disadvantaged experience poor health outcomes (often worse than rural counterparts) and face service barriers. While community health workers (CHWs) have been extensively employed in rural communities to address inequities, little attention has been given…
Adolescent sexual initiation and pregnancy: What more can be learned through further analysis of the demographic and health surveys in the Philippines
In the absence of reliable, easily accessible data on adolescent SRH, the DHS data can provide important insights about adolescent reproductive transitions such as sexual initiation and first pregnancy. However, there are limited variables in the datasets that could proxy for other important social determinants which prior studies have linked to adolescent SRH outcomes. There remains a need for timely and targeted collection of quantitative and q…

Early Childhood Nutritional Implications of the Rise in Factory Employed Mothers in Rural Cambodia: A Qualitative Study
The potential of task shifting selected maternal interventions to auxiliary midwives in Myanmar: A mixed-method study

Programme potential for the prevention of and response to sexual violence among female refugees: A literature review
Continuing international conflict has resulted in several million people seeking asylum in other countries each year, over half of whom are women. Their reception and security in overburdened camps, combined with limited information and protection, increases their risk and exposure to sexual violence (SV). This literature review explores the opportunities to address SV against female refugees, with a particular focus on low-resource settings. A s…
Utilisation of Health Services and Geography: Deconstructing Regional Differences in Barriers to Facility-Based Delivery in Nepal
Let no man write my epitaph”: The contributions of Percy Shelley, Thomas Moore and Robert Southey to the memorialisation of Robert Emmet
For centuries elegy has been instrumental to Irish culture and its self-expression. This essay considers the elegies both by and about Robert Emmet written by Thomas Moore, Robert Southey and Percy Bysshe Shelley as well those written by anonymous balladeers. Central to this essay is the examination of the topoi of Irish elegiac verse and song shared by these poems and the way in which they contribute to the evolution of this genre and the radica…
Investment case for improving maternal and child health: Results from four countries
National strategies that do not take into consideration the special circumstances of disadvantaged areas risk disempowering local managers and may lead to a "business-as-usual" acceptance of unreachable goals. To effectively guide health service delivery at a local level, national plans should adopt typologies that reflect the different problems and strategies to scale up key MNCH interventions
How does progress towards the MDG 4 affect inequalities between different subpopulations? Evidence from Nepal
BACKGROUND: Few previous studies have examined non-wealth-based inequalities in child mortality within developing countries. This study estimates changes in under-5-year-olds and neonatal mortality in Nepal across a range of subnational levels, which allows us to assess the degree of equity in Nepal's progress towards Millennium Development Goal 4. METHODS: Direct estimates of under-5-year-olds and neonatal death rates were generated for 1990-200…
The Poisonwood Bible: An Antidote for What Ails International Relations
To examine the heuristic value of a work of fiction in an international relations classroom, students in an upper-level political science course were asked what stood out to them about international political economy in the Barbara Kingsolver novel, The Poisonwood Bible. Student papers were analyzed in a phenomenologically informed hermeneutic study, for which they received no extra credit. Collective thematic analysis of responses identified thr…

Anti‐feminism in western Europe 1975–1987
This study traces the development of anti‐feminist attitude trends in Western Europe from 1975–1987. It focuses in particular on the sources of and changes in opposition to women's participation in politics by noting the percentages of Eurobarometer survey respondents who agreed in 1975, 1983, and 1987 that 'politics should be left to men
Measurement of Abnormal Returns From Small Firms
Correction for heteroscedasticity in returns from portfolios long in small firms and short in large firms listed on the New York Stock Exchange reduces the estimate of market risk and increases the estimated abnormal return. Greatly improved diagnostic test statistics are obtained, strengthening the evidence for the existence of positive average abnormal returns from small firms. Periodicity of order 6 and 12 months is identified. The estimation …
