Ancient Epistemologies
Reflection on knowledge is often assumed to have emerged with Greek philosophy. Earlier and contemporary modes of thinking in the ancient Near East, including ancient Israel, are assumed to be archaic and often left out of the picture. Against this view, the contributors of this volume aim to reconstruct the ancient epistemologies, the »paradigms«, »discourses«, and »episteme«, that developed in the ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean region a…

Handbuch Alttestamentliche Anthropologie
Modes of Argumentation: The Epistemology of Arguments in the Book of Job
This article excavates the epistemology of several modes of justification used by the characters in the book of Job. After a short survey of the types of »arguments from authority« used by Job's friends, I highlight the epistemology of some critical and rational ways of argumentation used by the different characters in the book, especially, but not only, Job. Personal experience, self-reflective thinking and secondorder thinking, questions of def…

Neubabylonische Frömmigkeit im Alten Testament?: Die East India House Inschrift und die deuteronomisch-deuteronomistische Theologie
To love God with all your heart (Deut 6:5) and the hope that God will write the law on the hearts (Jer 31:34) are key forms and expressions of Hebrew Bible personal piety. Hitherto neglected but close parallels between these forms of personal piety are to be found in the neo-Babylonian East India House Inscription by Nebuchadnezzar II. In this paper, we shall draw some parallels and propose that personal piety in Deuteronomy and Jeremiah is being…
Jan Dietrich provides a comprehensive history and analysis of the scapecow ritual in Deuteronomy 21:1-9, comparing it to its religious and judicial parallels from both the ancient Near East and the Bible, using historical methods from exegesis, cultural anthropology and comparative law.
The problem of moral realism does not seem to play a major role in the Hebrew Bible. Some texts like Gen 18 and others, however, do show that this problem was virulent for at least some Old Testament writers, and that it was coped with by way of arguing with God. Taking Gen 18 as case example, this article displays the conditions for the possibility of moral realism in the Hebrew Bible as well as some threads of its unfolding.
Foreign Women – Women in Foreign Lands: Studies on Foreignness and Gender in the Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East in the First Millennium BCE
When, where, how and for what purpose were the categories of foreignness and gender connected and activated in literary tradition? In this volume of papers read during three workshops held in Leipzig (2016), Jerusalem (2017), and Vienna (2018), international scholars from different disciplines and methodological approaches explore gender-specific constructions of foreignness/strangeness in the Old Testament, Egypt, and Mesopotamia from their part…
Bleach in the Rainbow: Latin Ethnicity and Preference for Whiteness
Persistent Advantage or Disadvantage: Evidence in Support of the Intergenerational Drag Hypothesis
By utilizing the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) and a measure of occupational prestige (OCCSCORE) as a labor market outcome, the authors examine variations in the degree of labor market discrimination faced by several ethnic and racial groups in the United States between 1880 and 1990. Results demonstrate that the sharpest decline in labor market discrimination against blacks occurred between 1960 and 1980. For black males the ext…
