The absolute chronology of the North Cemetery at Ayios Vasileios, Laconia
We establish the absolute chronology of Ayios Vasileios North Cemetery using 14 C dating. • KDE model of 56 14 C dates is compared to ceramic chronology of Mycenaean Greece. • The cemetery was in continuous use through Middle Helladic III to Late Helladic IIB. In mortuary archaeology, it can be particularly difficult to establish a spatiotemporal framework for specific contexts such as commingled or unfurnished burials. This is the case for the A…
Excavations in the Ancient Theatre of Sparta, 2008
This article presents the results of the 2008 excavation in the ancient theatre of Sparta conducted by the British School at Athens and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia. Kinship as social strategy
Biological distance measured from cranial and dental data. • Biologically homogeneous group buried in the same burial ground over a long period of time. • Mortuary practices as kin-making strategy. • Kinship as strategy for anchoring innovation in social practices. Exploring connectivity in Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age Greece and the Balkans using cranial non-metric analysis
The present study aims to explore connectivity and networking in Late Bronze Age (LBA)/Early Iron Age (EIA) Greece and the Balkans using morphological biodistance analysis and test the potentiality of newly introduced statistical tests, which were designed for challenging datasets, in this particular cultural area. Cranial non-metric traits were recorded in ten skeletal collections, spanning from East Crete to Romania. We followed an experimental…
The sanctuary at Keros in the Aegean Early Bronze Age
This article aims to summarise the results of three periods of fieldwork carried out since 2006. These are the Cambridge Keros Project of 2006–2008, the Keros Island Survey of 2012–2013, and the Keros-Naxos Seaways Project of 2015–2018. Taken together, these form a coherent, large-scale project that aimed to study a maritime landscape in some depth, putting the Kavos and Dhaskalio sites in a broader context, while through excavation understanding…
Tracing the missing fragments of Cycladic architecture
Open Area, Open Data
This article presents a holistic and reflexive process for archaeological fieldwork from inception to publication. The opportunities afforded by maturing digital techniques allowed fundamental rethinking of field and laboratory practice paradigms. A number of normally unquestioned aspects of archaeological praxis were examined with the goal of reorganizing information dynamics. Instead of a series of disparate processes in the field and field lab…
Kirrha 2008‐2015
